the J30 is putting out DV through the i-Link port so the capture should work as intended.
can you verify your capture settings for us, and also check what disc your are capturing to (in your Log nd Capture window under the Capture Settings tab … you’re looking for your “Capture/Input” setting and your “Scratch Disks…” setting)

FCP 5.1.2 doesn’t include any new effects in and of itself, what it does do is enable the use of FxPlug effects, either 3rd Party, or those that you may already have installed as part of Motion …. do you have Motion installed?

sounds like you have your clip’s audio set as a stereo pair, in this case select the clip in the timeline and press Option L (Modify > Stero Pair), now you’ll have access to each track separately

select the sequence in the fcp browser window, then press cmd-f to get the “Find” dialog
in the “For” popup, choose “Used Media” and then press the “Find All” button.

an easier way would be to simply drag and drop your whole sequnece into the 4:3 timeline, rather than copying clip by clip.

reel id’s are (or should be) emebeded in the media file … but does fcp actually read that info or is it merely displaying info as logged? if it does read that info, and if, for whatever reason, that info wasn’t embeded during capture, then that might explain the sudden loss of reel id afterwards. doesn’t explain why reel id won’t write though.

No. This is not a current or planned option (afaik).
XDCAM HD comes in 3 flavous, LP (18 Mbps VBR), SP (25 Mbps CBR) and HQ (35 Mbps VBR). For now, 35 Mbps VBR is as good as it gets. Properly shot footage looks absolutely superb on a true HD monitor.

XDCAM Transfer tool currently has no ability to import any kind of “Batch List” that might be generated following some Media Manager shenanigans.
Consequently. there’s no simple way to upres an edit originally captured via HD-SDI. So much for 2x realtime file transfer…

As a workaround, if you really want to edit in XDCAM HD @ 35Mbps, you should be able to create a capture preset using the HD-SDI input to the Blackmagic card, and set the compressor to use XDCAM HD (35Mbps).
But this is going all around the houses and will just be recompressing anyway ( so you might as well recomprees to, and cut in, DVCPRO HD)

You know its really difficult to quantify these things. I’m making the difficult transition to canopus edius as my primary edit tol myself. Here’s the thing, all the edit functions are right there, but its the implementaion of them that constantly surprises … because no one in their right mind would choose for a toolset that acts like the Canopus Edius tools do.
My guess is Edius was not designed by an editor (in fact they only just hired one prior to the last upgrade to version 4! ) It was more likely designed by a software programmer who was asked to create an nle that could be bundled with the hardware that the company is rightfully famous for. Its not bad … its just not good.

Sure, the mixed codec/system/frame rate support is awe inspiring to us poor fcp users with our debilitated timelines … its certainly trying really really hard and the latest version is a worthwhile improvement. With T/GVG’s support it will certainly improve (and i’m looking forward to version 5!) but for now its still just not quite right.

I know you’re looking for a list to fend off your boss, but unfortunately on paper the functionality does exist. however, if it helps …
