MPEG Streamclip is inded a great tool for converting QT files to AVI. Certainly, the direct AVI export from FCP can produce visually corrupt results. However, I have only personally seen this issue with SD material, where DV – PAL timelines have been exported to AVI using FCP’s Quicktime Conversion. I haven’t tried converting the .mov’s with QT Player or Compressor, so the results may be better using those apps than direct from FCP. On the other hand, MPEG Streamclip has produced great results every time as I am using it simply to rewrap the original DV media (I believe thats whats happening), rather than recompress it (as happens when using QT conversion).
The point being that a tool may be the perfect solution for one situation and yet wholly unsuited to another. In your case Jon, you are working with HD and wanting not only to wrap it as an AVI file, but also to recompress it to another codec. Obviously, I’m not able to guarntee a workflow that I haven’t used, but I’m more than happy to recommend a tool that I’ve had excellent results with.
As to the best codec for delivery …you are asking the wrong people. You need to ask the cable company what codec they want you to deliver on, or you may have the situation where you compress using a codec the cable company doesn’t have.

my guess is Shane is talking about digital transmission, whether digital terrestrial, satellite or other.

you can use File >Export > Using Quicktime Conversion… then choose AVI from the “Format” popup menu, press the “Options…” button and under Video “Settings…” and choose Compression Type > DV/DVCPRO – NTSC (or as required), similarly set the Audio “Settings” as required.
sadly the AVI files exported like this are not much cop, frequently including duplicate frames, causing stuttering playback.
the method that seems to work for me is to use File > Export > Quicktime Movie… choosing “Curent Settings” and unchecking “Make Self-Contained”, then opening the exported reference movie using the free MPEG Streamclip application, and choosing Export to AVI …. again, adjust the settings for DV/DVCPRO – NTSC blah blah blah and then press “Make AVI”
MPEG Streamclip uses its own codec algorithms, not Quicktime’s, and produces excellent cross paltform combatible results every time.

FWIW earlier today I was trying to set up a MBP edit station, editing in native DV with monitoring via FW to a PDW-F70 deck in AV/C mode … sadly I couldn’t get it to work, so had to use a DSR-1500 instead. My feeling is the FW port on these decks is output only in AV/C mode, hence my “doesn’t work” post. Nonetheless, I’m watching the thread in the hope of an answer. I’d be only too glad to be wrong (so long as someone can show me how to get it working properly) …. so keep it up!

my guess is the PDW-1500 does not actively convert to all outputs in the same way as, say, a DSR-1500 does (or your DVCAM deck).
thats probably the crux of the biscuit. am surprised you’re seeing a valid IMX50 signal over DV, didn’t know that could be done. good to know (are you sure your sequence is not DV?) -
problem seems to be that you are atempting to monitor IMX50 via firewire … firewire is fine for monitoring most DV codecs, but not for Sony’s MPEG IMX codec.

Wayne, try this … set your sequence’s audio outputs to 8 channel dual mono as before, but use the channel output assignments (right click in the auto select area of each audio track in the timeline) to output ch1 to ch1, ch2 to ch1 ch3 to ch1 etc … this way you can output a full mix to ch1 (duplicate the tracks and the steps abov, mapping to ch2 etc, if you need full mix on more than ch1)

agreed in every respect. the duped clips are a real pain … and what is with the pita “export> using assertion failure” feature ?
i have a love/hate relationship with that software … gotta love what it does well, but very frustrated with all the bugs and oh-so-obvious missing features.
