  • Best use of MPEG Streamclip?

Posted by Jon Boffa on September 23, 2006 at 5:00 pm

I just dloaded MPEG Streamclip, as I heard its useful in converting QuitckTime files to .AVI.
I opened the largest .mov version of my :30 spot (see below for workflow/settings), and I’ve exported to .AVI type, with Sorensen3 compressor setting.
End result: audio plays, but just white screen image.

What Compression setting would work best in MPEG Streamclip to deliver the best res for a cable TV spot?

    THANKS

    PROJECT WORKFLOW:
    1080i HDV footage captured;
    FCP Sequence settings:
    – 720×480 NTSC DV (3:2)
    – Pixel A/R: NTSC – CCIR 601 / DV 720×480
    – Field Dominance: Lower (Even)
    – QT Video Settings – Compressor: HDV 1080i60

    FCP EXPORT FILE TYPES:
    – QuickTime Movie (various sizes)
    – MPEG 4 Movie – HD 10-bit Uncompressed 1080i60 — 7.87GB

    Hi,
MPG Streamclip is not the best progarmm to convert QT to AVI. For that I would just export from QT directly to AVI.(With the QT player, Compressor, FC,..)
MPG Streamclip is perfect for converting from any MPG format to QT or AVI. You can convert from the MPG to a .mov o .avi with any of the codec that you have installed.
And if you want to make MPGs for cable-tv (I don’t know much about) Compressor is what you need.
    Salud,

MPEG Streamclip is inded a great tool for converting QT files to AVI. Certainly, the direct AVI export from FCP can produce visually corrupt results. However, I have only personally seen this issue with SD material, where DV – PAL timelines have been exported to AVI using FCP’s Quicktime Conversion. I haven’t tried converting the .mov’s with QT Player or Compressor, so the results may be better using those apps than direct from FCP. On the other hand, MPEG Streamclip has produced great results every time as I am using it simply to rewrap the original DV media (I believe thats whats happening), rather than recompress it (as happens when using QT conversion).

The point being that a tool may be the perfect solution for one situation and yet wholly unsuited to another. In your case Jon, you are working with HD and wanting not only to wrap it as an AVI file, but also to recompress it to another codec. Obviously, I’m not able to guarntee a workflow that I haven’t used, but I’m more than happy to recommend a tool that I’ve had excellent results with.

As to the best codec for delivery …you are asking the wrong people. You need to ask the cable company what codec they want you to deliver on, or you may have the situation where you compress using a codec the cable company doesn’t have.
