  • XDCAM Monitoring Via Firewire Problem

Posted by Dennis Dillon on September 19, 2006 at 1:25 am

Set up is a 17 MAc Book Pro
Connected to an external firewire drive, looped to a Sony PDW-1500. Files are transferred using the sony XD Transfer software and loaded on to the external drive. No problem here. But I do not get a video out of the PDW-1500 when playing back in FCP. I’ve read both manuals. No mention of this type of setup existing.
I’m having no luck on using the video out of my PDW-1500 as a monitoring source out.
Could it be not possibe. My thoughts were centered around the known use of a DV device as an output source, but adding the firewire drive in between might be my problem. Not so, I replaced the 1500 with a Sony DV Cam and the external video is fine. I My settings on the FCP are all XD IMX 50, and the deck 1500 in in PC Remote when capturing or transferring files to the external drive. I’ve reset the deck out of FAM mode and reconnected the firewire cables. Set FCP External Video to ALL Frames. Set FCP the AV Device Play back to Apple FireWire NTSC. No luck.

Is there a setting on the PDW-1500 I’m not seeing?

problem seems to be that you are atempting to monitor IMX50 via firewire … firewire is fine for monitoring most DV codecs, but not for Sony’s MPEG IMX codec.

    Andy,
Thanks. I see your reason for not being able to monitor IMX 50 on a DV feed. But,
I removed the PDW-1500 deck out and replaced it with the Sony DVCAM, and was able to monitor the IMX 50 timeline out of the DVCAM video out. My guess is that FCP timeline outputs the IMX 50 as DV from the firewire of the Mac Pro. Any thoughts? Is there a better way to monitor IMX 50 XDCAM and not convert it down to DV. I would like to see the IMX codec from the laptop on a good CRT. I know I could purchase an Apple display, but do I have to?

my guess is the PDW-1500 does not actively convert to all outputs in the same way as, say, a DSR-1500 does (or your DVCAM deck).
thats probably the crux of the biscuit. am surprised you’re seeing a valid IMX50 signal over DV, didn’t know that could be done. good to know (are you sure your sequence is not DV?)

Have you setup your PDW-1500 for E-E, instead of PB (playback)?

[Dennis Dillon] “I would like to see the IMX codec from the laptop on a good CRT.”

The problem there is that you need a capture card for the Mac Book Pro. Which at this time, there are none existing.

    A,
The seq is IMX 50, but the ouput is DV. So the conversion is from the laptop.

Have you set your input to iLink? That will make a major difference.

FWIW earlier today I was trying to set up a MBP edit station, editing in native DV with monitoring via FW to a PDW-F70 deck in AV/C mode … sadly I couldn’t get it to work, so had to use a DSR-1500 instead. My feeling is the FW port on these decks is output only in AV/C mode, hence my “doesn’t work” post. Nonetheless, I’m watching the thread in the hope of an answer. I’d be only too glad to be wrong (so long as someone can show me how to get it working properly) …. so keep it up!

    Cheers
    Andy

It looks like the XDCAM system isn’t going to output any video thru firewire. Well, have you looked into a Canopus solution to hook up so that you could see an output from FCP? Or another solution would be to connect up a second monitor to you Mac Book Pro and use it as a Desktop Preview.
