Hello, I am trying to back up projects for editing in the future. I don’t use timecode so redigitizing is not an useful option.

    – Is there a way like in publishing programs to back up only what you have used? As in ‘Collect for output’ or ‘Package’?
    – Is there a way to see in a project what has been used? (like in DVD Studio). If I through away every piece of media in the project folder FCP doesn’t even notice even though they are in sequences…
    – The docs are useless in this respect, it says you should back up non timecode media but doesn’t offer any useful suggestions.
I appreciate any constructive advice on this, thanks. -Derryl

[Derryl Rice] “Is there a way like in publishing programs to back up only what you have used? “

It is called the Media Manager. And you can have it copy only the footage used in the project to another drive. The only thing is that it has big trouble with speed changes and some issues with subclips. After you manage the cut, you will have to fix it first, before you delete all the media.

Oh…I think that pretty much relates to every question you asked. Except for this:

[Derryl Rice] “If I through away every piece of media in the project folder FCP doesn’t even notice even though they are in sequences…”

If you throw away the media, FCP will notice. Every clip in your timeline that has not been rendered will be gone. Toss the render files and then ALL of your footage will be gone. Don’t do that. Use the Media Manager.

Hi Shane, thanks for the reply. When you say “And you can have it copy only the footage used in the project to another drive” do you mean everything brought in to FCP or just what was used in sequences? For example I bring in 500 photos and only put 6 in the sequences does it back up all 500 or just the 6?

Also you say Media Manager handles the other issues but it doesn’t list any files (used or unused) only a lump sum of say 54GB.

Is there a tutorial floating around concerning this? Thanks. -Derryl

It will copy over only the photos used in the sequence.

If you want a list of files used, export an EDL. I recall that someone posted a way to reveal all the clips used in the sequence but I can’t remember where I saw that. Once you media manage the cut, there will be a bin of footage. In there you’ll see a list of footage used.

Tutorial on this? No. It is clearly laid out in the manual.
