afaik its not yet downloadable. at the moment it seems Sony’s policy is not to release public betas.
shouldn’t be very much longer tho. my understanding was an offilcial release in October… which is fast runing out.

just asked this of our camera guys … they said you can do it, but it won’t be as wide or as long, and will be soft at the edges.

Wayne, you’re going to love the long overdue update to XDCAM Transfer v1.1. You can set it to import only the ‘monitored’ channels. Great stuff.

Mixing SD and HD material should be fine, so long as the SD material has been well shot. Which codec are you shooting with the XDCAM HD? If you’re using the HQ 35Mbps codec (the best one) then you’re going to have to figure in the time required to convert the SD footage into this format, either through a software based conversion process, or via an F70 deck with the SDI upconvert option board. If you’re using the SP 25Mbps codec, which is essentially an HDV variant, you will be able to import directly from the upconverted output of an HDV deck.
You might want to consider XDCAM HD purely as the aquisition format, but capture and edit the various footages using a 3rd codec such as DVCPRO HD, which will confer a number of benefits, not least of which is taking you out of MPEG as an edit format. Although that does mean you don’t get the benefit of speedy file transfer based workflow, with the XD material.
Alternatively, as already suggested, you could use a different platform to edit this project. Canopus Edius is probably the only NLE which can edit with the native MXF files, from the XDCAM discs, directly in the timeline. It can also mix footages of any other format directly in the timeline … in realtime. Very impresive. (Plus, with an as yet unreleased proxy file transfer utility, you edit with the proxies whilst auto-conforming to the high-res media as a background process. They’ve worked hard on this one and again, its pretty impressive) … bloody ugly interface though, takes a fair bit of geting used to 😉 If only FCP could and would offer the same.

right click directly on or around the Track Lock icon and/or Auto Select icon in the timeline … the context menu will have “Audio Output” as the first item in the list … move your mouse onto this and you’ll see a submenu from which you can choose onto which channel to output the selected track

Which version of FCP are you currently working with? There was a relatively recent problem (with the introduction of FCP 5 i think) where the ability to properly media manage sequences occurred when the original media had alredy been deleted… that was supposedly fixed with the 5.1 update.
Sadly, FCP’s Media Manager tool has always been less than reliable … but reliably so. What I mean is that what it can’t cope with was something that could be predicted, anticipated, and worked around.
In my own experience, albeit not recent, the 6 steps you outline above is exactly how the process went. Capture at offline res. Offline Edit. Use Media Manager’s “Make Offline” function. Recapture only whats needed, at online res. Online Edit. Output. -

I haven’t used it for a while now, but I loved it while I did. As you noted, it serves as both a mixer and a control surface, plus it obviates the need for a separate MIDI controller. Its all in one.
Everything happens over the single firewire connection … but I seem to recall that that might be problematic if you also use an AJA IO box on the same FW bus.
