remember that a nested sequence has all the atriubutes of a clip including the whole clip “instance” thing. its possible that whilst one or more of your sequenecs were correctly referencing the original, the others were referencing “instances” … and you’ll remember also that a clip instance doesn’t actually have to exist in the browser to exist in the timeline any more than a master clip needs to be in the browser (it doesn’t)

not an answer but possibly an explanation for part of the problem.

if you do this a lot you might want to consider xmedit’s Traffic, which was created to ease this kind of workflow

Yes it is. If the native format ot the timeline is XDCAM HD then it is using an MPEG codec which uses a GOP structure, not I-frame. That means FCP needs to conform the edit according to the GOP structure as a single MPEG clip for full quality edit to tape palyback.

if the clip is only logged ie is Offline, then you can select it and choose Modify > Clip Settings
you can investigate the clips audio capture settings in there

if the clips are already online, then without first making them offline you can’t use the above method
(of course, you could make them offline first, investigate the setings as above, and then reconnect afterwards but that sounds a bit tedious)

if you really need the info you can export the clips as an XML file
and then parse the XML for the info (its all in there)

There are probably many permutations of settings, but personally I have gotten bettre results with AVI’s (and more flexabilty with settings) when using MPEG Streamclip.
I would export a reference movie from FCP (Export > Quicktime Movie w/ Current Settings and Make Movie Self Contained NOT checked)
Then bring that movie into MPEG Streamclip and go to File > Export to AVI
In the AVI Exporter window, you can change the Compressor, Quality and Frame Size as needed …you might want to try Sorenson 3, or h.264 for a good quality compression
(I use this method to produce native codec AVI’s so can’t be much help on exctly which compressor you need/

also, don’t keep too many of those sequences open in the timeline if you’re not actively working on them. open sequences, even if not active, will use up RAM

hehe … i was just having a dig Walter, hence the wink. apologies. i know of many many people, yourself included, who love their Bella keyboards, and thats all good. i was just expressing my preference.

i’m more of a jkl man myself. on the one hand, coming from a linear background, i love jogshuttle controls, but on the other, coming from a linear background, i’m used to pounding on my jogshuttle and expecting instant results. the keystroke sending variety of the jogshuttle just doesn’t ring my bell i guess, whereas the direct hook into the system version that we get from FCP’s control surface integration is very much better, very reactive.
… ahhh, but then we get into the whole “can i be bothered to move my hands all the way over to the control surface’s jogshuttle wheel when jkl is right here under my figertips” issue 🙂

just to confirm. yes, Edius does use a proprietary DV codec and will not play back without it. there is no Mac version of this codec.
your options are to print to tape using an edius system and then recapture that in FCP as suggested by Bogiesan
or to convert the Edius AVI to a QuickTime compatible codec using a PC … Procoder would be best for this, as suggested by Dave
