Monitor out from Final Cut timeline with HDV and XDCAM HD?
My system is latest intel Mac machine with latest FCP and a blackmagic HD extreme card and an external grading monitor with most inputs.
I have a few projects on the go, one shot and being edited in 720p/25p HDV timeline (PAL), and the other XDCAM HD native timeline with 1080p/25p footage (PAL).
I’m coming out of HD Extreme card via the three component outputs into the 3 component inputs on my grading monitor. However, I am not getting real-time playback on the grading monitor. The best I can get is a still frame of where the playhead is parked on the timeline in FCP. If I scrub through the timeline, I get this motion replicated on the grading monitor, but as soon as I hit play in FCP the grading monitor stays on the frame from the point I hit play.
Is there any way I can get real-time playback of the FCP timeline on my external monitor?
I also have a Dell 24″ computer monitor (LCD model 2407WFP) with DVI and component inputs too. I also have a Blackmagic HD-Link box.
No matter what I try I can’t get the FCP timeline to playback.
My only workaround (which is a big pain as it takes time) is to drop my entire timeline onto an SD uncompressed 8-bit timeline and render it, then it plays out to external monitor.
Is this an FCP thing, a Blackmagic thing or an XDCAM HD and HDV 720p thing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I just can’t figure out how to get realtime play-though to external monitor from FCP timeline.

This sounds like a sequence/footage mismatch.
Did you load the easy set up for either HDV or HD XD cam?
Is there a new BM driver for these codecs?
Does BM support these HD formats on output?

Easy – select “Blackmagic 1080 DVC Pro HD 50i” Easy setup and you should get real time output. I have a HD extreme card and it works perfectly with our XDCam HD material

David, yes I loaded the easy set up for both these two separate projects of 1080p XDCAM HD 35Mbps and the other separate project of HDV 720p/25p. These are two separate projects remember, not both on the same timeline or sequence.
There is no BM driver for 720p, just 720/50, not 720/25. I don’t think BM support either.
Steve, if I do what you suggest it will not be native XDCAM HD timeline anymore, it will become a new codec of DVCPRO HD, which I don’t want. I need to stay working in a native XDCAM HD timeline of 1080p for the XDCAM stuff.
Also, what about the other project that is HDV 720p/25p?
Do I need to buy a better card from a different company, or is there another solution.

We’re able to playback 1080i/50 HDV material just fine via an AJA Kona 3. I simply select AJA Kona 3 HDV Playback with the appropriate frame size and frame rate and it’s realtime and very clean.

when you change the easy setup it doesn’t effect your timeline settings – we use XDCam HD all the time and this method just works. you just have to remember to reset the easy setup to XDCam HD if you want to create another sequence.
Can’t help with the 720P timeline – there doesn’t seem to be a way to do this.
