Change in grandparent sequence->unpredictable results
Posted by Bob Cole on November 25, 2006 at 12:49 amLengthy post but as short as I could make it:
Still new to FCP, and I know the workflow I

remember that a nested sequence has all the atriubutes of a clip including the whole clip “instance” thing. its possible that whilst one or more of your sequenecs were correctly referencing the original, the others were referencing “instances” … and you’ll remember also that a clip instance doesn’t actually have to exist in the browser to exist in the timeline any more than a master clip needs to be in the browser (it doesn’t)
not an answer but possibly an explanation for part of the problem.
if you do this a lot you might want to consider xmedit’s Traffic, which was created to ease this kind of workflow

Happy tx giving!
AS a fellow ex edit*or, i too was rather excited about all the linking and such that FCP seemed to offer, until i actually started to use it.(maybe its me? maybe i just cant get my head around the FCP media heiarchy?)
its nowhere near as bulletproof as edit’s sub timelines
it is possible for fcp to have multiple versons of things with the same name
why? i do not know (i believe its called a “feature”) this makes it very difficult to keep track of what you are working on.i can have a nested sequence, which i access by double clicking. but if i drag that nested sequence out of the main sequence to a bin, i now have 2 nest sequences with the same name that are not the same.
also, if i need to lengthen my nest beyond or less than waht it was when i firs made it, it ripples my timeline. (another “feature” no doubt)
what i have found to be the most bullt proof way to do stuff is to export qt
movies (using command e) and import them, then cut them in. kinda like in edit before version 6 and sub timelines.Lately i have also been round tripping stuff to motion, but that interface is so opposite of fcp, i have only been doing very simple things there
soo in summary command e and import is your friend!

I did not even drag the nested sequence to the Browser — the old version of the original nested sequence simply showed up in the timeline when I double-clicked the child sequence. (the FCP manual uses parent and child language for this too, but backwards as far as I can tell.)
Cmd-E does nothing on my Bella keyboard. I used File-Export-QT Movie, and reimported it.
Andy, this “instance” thing is weird. I surely did not mean to invoke multi-cam or multi-clip funtionality. I looked at the software you recommend, and it would be great, but I do not do enough of this to justify it.
I guess I will just make a lot of QT movies and import them. It is a shame, because being able to ripple a change all the way through would be fantastic.
Thanks Andy and Bob for your feedback. I feel slightly less insane now than before. When the spots have finished airing, I am going to go back into it and try some things — perhaps emptying the trash will help.
Always a welcome feeling.
