Editing Edius AVIs with FCP

FCP doesn’t edit with AVI’s. If you can get it working, it will be clunky at best. Quicktime is what FCP cuts with.

Yes, I’m aware of FCPs native QT use, but what I want to know is what is a good way to get these AVIs read/converted. I’ve tried Flip4Mac and MPEG Streamclip. I found out Edius has its own video codec so, am i screwed?

I have no knowledge about Edius so you’ll have to wait for someone else to chime in on that one.

You aren’t going to find any Quicktime components for Edius since this is a Directshow codec designed for Windows. Mac OS will never read it. Quicktime can read common generic AVI codecs like Cinepack and “None”, but for unique codecs (and there are hundreds of them) you need to use a PC to convert it to Quicktime.

There are numerous tools for Windows that can do this. For some strange reason Quicktime Pro for Windows is not one of them. But there are plenty of others. Do a Google search for “AVI to MOV” and that should get you on the right track. Try to find a free one if you can.

I actually just looked into it. Are you sure this is a proprietery codec? It looks as if it’s just a regular DV codec but it uses hardware to do the work. One way to check is if it will playback on PC that doesn not have the Edius hardware.

If it is DV, you’re still in the same boat because Quicktime won’t read AVI DV files either. But you can use Focus’ DV Conversion Suite to make it a Quicktime without any recompression.

Forget trying to import it or transcode it.

Ask them to print the material out to DV tape for you.

just to confirm. yes, Edius does use a proprietary DV codec and will not play back without it. there is no Mac version of this codec.
your options are to print to tape using an edius system and then recapture that in FCP as suggested by Bogiesan
or to convert the Edius AVI to a QuickTime compatible codec using a PC … Procoder would be best for this, as suggested by Dave

Sooooo,
The reason I couldn’t re-digitize this avi footage is because of time. (we’re talking hours and hours of stuff) I also didn’t mention that the procoder software that we have on this modded PC can’t be accessed becuase the PCI Express slot decided to die on the motherboard, therefore I don’t have a working video card and can’t even “see” my computer.
I’m buying a mid=range dell and installing Procoder 2.0 and transfering everything to QT. Then I will take the PC and use it as a sled when it starts snowing.
