OT: Has anyone been using the Tascam FW-1082?
Posted by Tom Matthies on October 18, 2006 at 1:41 amAnd, if so, how do you like it?
I’m considering getting one to replace a Berhinger 1604A mixer on my home FCP setup. It appears to function as a small mixer as well as a control surface. Outputs look a little limited but I will have a Rane audio DA on the output to give me 8 stereo feeds for my various machines.
Any opinions in the pasture?
Thanks in advance,

October 18, 2006 at 1:49 amI haven’t used it for a while now, but I loved it while I did. As you noted, it serves as both a mixer and a control surface, plus it obviates the need for a separate MIDI controller. Its all in one.
Everything happens over the single firewire connection … but I seem to recall that that might be problematic if you also use an AJA IO box on the same FW bus.

October 18, 2006 at 3:32 amI am using it, and really liking it. But as Andy says, you cannot have another firewire device connected to the system, or it might stop working part way thru your day.
I really like it though.

October 18, 2006 at 11:40 amI use it’s big brother, the FW-1884 with an AJA io. I added a n inexpensive FW400 card to an open slot in my G5 to keep them on seperate busses, and life has been fine for over a year. I just wish I had more time to get into everything the Tascam can really do…

October 18, 2006 at 7:17 pmI had an inexpensive firewire 400 card too, but then that reduced my Decklink HD capabilities to SD only. So…it will work fine if you get the expansion card for more FW busses. BUT…if you have an HD card and a PCI-X machine, that won’t allow you to do HD. I hear this was solved with the PCIe architecture.

October 19, 2006 at 12:47 amI’m running an Aja Io La on this particular machine. It’s running of of the G5’s internal firewire bus. I also have an FW800, three port card with an open port. I would imagine that this mixer should run off of the FW800 port but would it then slow the bus down to FW400 speeds? Would it work to run the Tascam board off of this card without problems?

October 25, 2006 at 5:55 pmJust curious on your setup. Are you also running a dv deck via firewire.
I have 1 fw card dedicated to my external drives
1 fw card dedicated to my dsr 11 dv deck
and the internal dedicated to the tascam fw 1082i’m getting dropped frames when using sliders (surface control) in FCP. Any thoughts?
