There may be some kind of bug related to plugins. On whatever I was running before .12 I had to move the Pro Tools plugins out of their folder on at least one of my machines. Most annoying. Seems to be OK now.

MC is of course not perfect, but it has come a long way in the last few years.

So the NEC is connected directly to the iMac via a display port cable with a thunderbolt to display port adapter? If so, have you tried changing the adapter? I normally use Apple, Belden, or whatever OWC says will work.

mp4 is a container, not a codec. Do you know what is the codec?

It’s possible it is a codec that is not supported. You can look at the file with Invisor.

First, understand that the latest Desktop Video is not necessarily the best.

I would make sure you can see the output from Media Express or Davinci Resolve. As you may know, there is a free version of Resolve.

Using hard drives for backup or archive is not a good idea. Especially if you don’t occasionally spin up the drives. Tape is many times more reliable. Due to budgetary constraints (I’m poor;-)) I’m still using LTO5 which is still working fine.

It’s not IF a hard drive will fail, it’s when!

I find the latest version of Desktop Video is not always the best and somewhat device dependent. I have an Avid DNxIO which is a version of the original Ultrastudio 4K and sometimes use an older version of Desktop Video.

Just tried the 17.1 Studio install on my cheesegrater with High Sierra and the dongle inserted. Installer gives error about incompatible OS and will not install.

I have used a Datavideo TBC for this but I believe I used the Blackmagic Media Express as the capture tool with an internal BMD card.

I have advised folks for years to not use Media Composer for this type of capture. The Shuttle to Media Express might work.

Import is mostly deprecated. The emphasis now is on linking and editing with linked files or linking and transcoding or rewrapping.

I’m thinking one can export to something like DNxHD with the markers, then transcode that in ffmpeg to h.264 or h.265. Keep in mind that mp4 is a container, not a codec. Both matter.

I think Handbrake is ffmpeg underneath. It does not have all the options one can do in ffmpeg at the command line. ffmpeg is a good thing to learn.

By the way, the latest is not always the greatest when it comes to drivers and Desktop Video. In addition to that, the drivers from the manufacturer are often better than the Microsoft drivers.

This is a known issue on some versions of Media Composer. I don’t see where you mentioned what version you are on, but I believe this is fixed in 2020.10.

I have a 2009 which is a 4,1 and I have flashed it to 5,1 so macOS and everything thinks it is a 2010.

I also have 16 running but I am on 10.13.6. I would go to 13 before doing anything else. Also make sure you are running the NVIDIA web driver.

Sometimes you have to pick which bugs you can live with. I have found this particularly true over the years with BMD’s drivers. Speaking of which, what if you bypass the US4K by uninstalling the Desktop Video/drivers?
