    Hi everybody,

I have an MP4 720p 29.97 video with a 6 Mbps bitrate that I have edited using DaVinci Resolve 17. I would like to render it using the same format and with a bitrate around 6-12 Mbps but I have not been succesful at all. Everytime I render, the final video has always a 1-3 Mbps bitrate. I tried different presets, setting quality to “Best” and even restricting the bitrate to very high values such as 50-80 Mbps but still, the final rendered version has always 1-3 Mbps. Does anybody know why? I have been digging in internet looking for a solution but I cannot find anyone with this problem. ?

As extra information, I have an MSI laptop with i7-7700 CPU and GTX NVIDIA 1060 GPU and I am using the software in Windows 10. I am also quite new with DaVinci Resolve so I would appreciate if anyone could share his expertise with me and tell me where the problem might be or whether I am forgetting to set up any proper configuration.

    Thank you very much! ?

I would export the video in a mezzanine codec such as DNxHD and then transcode it in free tool ffmpeg. You can use something like https://laptrinhx.com/an-ffmpeg-gui-for-windows-3310232332/ as a frontend (GUI) to ffmpeg. ffmpeg by itself is command line only. Jan Ozer has books and online training that cover working with ffmpeg. He is at https://streaminglearningcenter.com/

    Hope that helps,

    Robert

Hi Robert, thank you for your reply.

Actually, I did something similar as is what most of the people seems to be recommending to use together with DaVinci Resolve. I basically rendered my files in Cineform and compressed them into MP4 using Handbrake. With Handbrake I can choose the bitrate I need. Also, I have noticed that quality is slightly better. However, I am not sure how much impact this process has as my original video is MP4 and I cannot change that. ?

However, I still do not understand why I can not have a higher bitrate with DaVinci Resolve even when I restrict the bitrate to very high values. How is possible that it renders a video that originally has 6 Mbps bitrate with 1-3 Mbps? I do not understand how the software decides the bitrate and why it ignores my bitrate resctriction. I have not found many people with that problem so I am assuming I might have something not properly configurated… But I do not know what can it be since I have been trying everything and nothing seems to work. ?

I actually would like to find a solution for this problem because I like the edit options that DaVinci Resolve offers but is annoying having to render twice just because of this bitrate issue. ?

    Good,

I think Handbrake is ffmpeg underneath. It does not have all the options one can do in ffmpeg at the command line. ffmpeg is a good thing to learn.

As far as the bitrate in Resolve, I believe I have had it work in some previous version. It’s possible that the version you are using is broken. Those compressed outputs is apparently not something the Resolve devs spend a lot of time of fixing. In addition to that the AAF to Avid is broken again.

    Take it EZ,

    Robert
