Might also be that Dell Monitor. I’ve seen a KB article on Apple about Dells causing dropped frames recently. No URL, sorry.

Biggest problem most people have is improper placement of audio speakers. So, audio is there – you just can’t hear it because you are not monitoring properly. They should be attached to the deck/cam, not the Mac. Your video monitor/or TV set should also be hooked up to the deck. If you are not set up this way, as indicated in the manual, it causes a lot of confusion amongst newbies.
FCP is more than an app, it’s a system. “Can’t hear my audio” is probably the #1 problem new folks experience. What helps is a good FCP class.

A 20 HOUR long film? Holey moley. I saw like a 12 hour one about Jerusalem once. You had to go on 3 different days to see the whole thing.
A Keep your project lean and mean. Blow away any media you definitely will not use. You may want to have a separate project with all your selects, and then bring in only the ones you need to your main project.
Probably too late, but capturing small clips (scene and take) instead of entire tape rolls makes for a snappier timeline. Unfortunately, most people capture entire tape rolls and seek time on the drive slows.

What is the size and format of your image? The larger the image is, the more problematic it usually is.
