Hey, does anyone know of a good online store to buy a Kona LH card. We want to pick up two of them and I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a pricing difference between resellers, or is it useless to shop around for something like that?

    Thanks,
    Eli

    P.S.
We have 3 Kona SD cards that we are replacing. Would Aja maybe hook us up? The reason we are getting new cards is that the Kona SD cards conflict with FCP 5 and we bought two Production Suites (before we knew about the confliction) so we are now forced to upgrade our cards too. We had been talking with AJA for a while and they were trying to help us get the cards to work with FCP 5; they even sent us a new Kona SD at one point, but it didn’t work. Then they told us that they would try to modify a Kona SD card to work with FCP5 for us, but they seem to be avoiding my phone calls (for like 2 or more months now). At one point a support guy told us that if we couldn’t get it to work (cuz it was supposed to), then he would put us in contact with the sales department and see if we couldn’t arrange something.

    AJA doesn’t sell directly.

    http://www.promax.com is outstanding.

I purchase most of my gear locally in Atlanta through the WH Platts company. If you can develop a relationship with a local VAR, that’s always the best thing.

Actually it was posted on the AJA web site for months that the older Kona SD cards were not supported for the G5 and the FCP5 upgrade. those cards were developed for the G4
The new cards were developed for the G5 PCIx and newer PCIe machines and sorry AJA is pretty much like any other Mfg — after 30 days you are on your own.

–complaining you cannot get tech support or special discounts on a product out of warranty via a PS is not the way to get any favors from any manufacturer.

    Eli,

Not sure which mac you are using but I have had no problems with the Kona SD and FCP 5 on my G4.
The key is to upgrade the drives to the Blackmagic drivers which will only work with FCP 5 and the Kona SD.

I had heard that there was a AJA modification done on the Kona SD to allow using it on G5’s. is this what was done for your unit?

I have never had any issue with the tech support from AJA as I have found them to be quite supportive so I can not direct relate to your issues.

The Tech Support at AJA was very helpful, I did not mean to imply otherwise. I think that I just exhausted my avenues with them, and am now biting the bullet and upgrading the cards. Got a great deal from Tekserve (we are in NYC…don’t know if they exist elsewhere). It is just tough to get the boss to upgrade a few cards after having just shelled out for the two production suites. We are a motion GFX place, so FCP is really not on the top of our list for things to upgrade and get equipment for, though I am the editor here and am pushing for it. The boss also wants to upgrade our Flame and get rid of the current Flame’s license and turn it into a smoke only station (thus phasing out FCP here). I don’t know why exactly…but hell, if he wants to send me to Smoke school I won’t complain.

Go with the VAR that has the best rep in your area. Having access to the tech people in your city is invaluable.
