What you want to do is use your exported DV movie as the source to encode your Flash (flv) movie. Use an encoder that can use the On2VP6 codec. And, use 2-pass encoding. That will give you the best result. Choose the highest data rate viewers of your site can handle. You can also export a reference movie (do not check “make self-contained) which will be smaller in size than your self-contained DV movie.

Are the animatics the final product that will be used in the HD show, or are they just an approximation?

  • Unless you monitor your show on a grading-level external monitor you won’t know what’s “real.” You need a card or box (AJA and Blackmagic Design make good ones) that sends the proper video signal to the monitor.

True 24 won’t sync to 23.98 (23.976). If your music has hits synced to picture you’ll lose sync as you move into the show.

I guess that info isn’t saved with a project. I make a custom Easy Setup for each show that has different settings than normal.

May 12, 2009 at 10:33 pm in reply to: Compressor Fail

Try exporting a self-contained or reference movie from FCP. Then, drag that into Compressor and go from there. Export Using Compressor doesn’t always work as expected.

Also, try trashing prefs, repairing permissions and run Disk Warrior. If you don’t own it, buy it. It’s an indispensable program.

May 12, 2009 at 10:28 pm in reply to: Widescreen export

What kind of file do you want to end up with? What you are seeing is probably squeezed anamorphic. If you want a file that plays widescreen try Export Using Quicktime Conversion. Select Options>Video Settings which with certain formats gives you the choice of 4×3 or 16×9. If that option doesn’t appear there’s also a size button that will let you set the size. In Dimensions choose Custom and enter the size. Hope this helps.

What are your settings? What kind of system setup, etc? What codec is your source and what is your export codec?

It sounds like you might be seeing either a veru fast dissolve of pulldown. How did you encode the .mov to .mv2 for the DVD? If you didn’t use Compressor do so with a 2-pass preset. During the first pass the program examines the entire file and then adjusts the encode appropriately. If you don’t do it that wat when the encoder encounters an anomaly it messes up.
