Closed Captioning from FCP
Posted by Alan Smith on May 13, 2009 at 7:08 pmWe have our shows/commercials closed captioned. They caption company provides us with the caption files and we are attempting to output a master from FCP that has the captioning, but we seem to spinning our wheels.
We create the content/show/commercial and send a QT to the caption company, who sends us back a file that we insert into FCP timeline. We place our original clip in V1 and the caption file in V2. We mask V2 so that only the caption data is visible from V2. The timeline is SD 720×480 29.97 output via Kona 3 (version 4.0).
We are unable to get the captioning data to output to preview/master. What are we missing?

If you put your client monitor in HV delay and connected straight to your Kona, do you see the CC?If so, try again with the monitor connected to your deck, and your deck in E-E.
If the first is succes but not the latter, then go into your deck settings and set it to NOT to blank the first lines.

May 13, 2009 at 7:55 pmBouke…that was VERY uncalled for. Highly unprofessional and absolutley irrelvant.
Alan, I think this is only possible with special software…
But what do I know? I always send my stuff out. Has this worked before?

I AM a professional, and i believe i did try to help to solve the issue.
I do this in my free time, without any favours asked back, EXCEPT that I feel free to add comments. You on the other hand, don’t offer any help, just comments.
For the others, you (should) know me good enough to place things into perspective.
(and there is an ugly picture of me on this site somewhere, if you like to comment.)

Comments are fine. Personal attacks are not. We all do this on our free time. We’re all volunteers, not one of the leaders gets paid to do this.
But we do also help the fine folks who run these forums keep an eye out for comments like those you made earlier.

May 13, 2009 at 8:21 pmWe have historically sent our stuff to network and let them close caption. In light of the current economy, we are looking for ways to reduce expenditures and we have found a couple companies who will create the caption files for significantly less money than the network. We were are trying this with a commercial to check for viability rather than a show that is on deadline.
They have provided the caption file and we can put it in FCP and the data is present on line 21. We can see the data on our preview monitors when overscanned. When we create a QT movie, we can see the data. We just do not get any of the captioning text on our TV when we play it via Kona TV or through a deck as a pass through.

May 13, 2009 at 8:30 pmAlan,
First, i’m not in NTSC land, but i do have a lot (well, more than average) of theoretical info on the subject.
(I write subtitle / CC software…)Check the Kona boards. I’m pretty sure the Kona is able to do just this.
Of course, when you say ‘overscanned’ you mean ‘underscanned’.
Not sure how that works in NTSC, but normally it ‘should’ be blanked, and only visible in HV delay.
Also check your codec if there is indeed room for the first lines.
(Eg XDcam has 32 extra lines that FCP does not use…)But most important (and yes, at the risk of insulting you aain), if you say cost reduction, you’re not adding roll-up captions, are you?

May 13, 2009 at 8:31 pmHave you called AJA tech support to ask if this is possible? It’s supposed to be possible in some fashion, but we do not do any sort of CC work here so I have no experience actually trying to output CC material.
I can say that we use CaptionMax for all our Captioning and they are surprisingly affordable. Just in case you haven’t checked with them yet.
As noted earlier, there is another rather long thread down below that has a lot of information about CC’ing.
