I vote for converting all the HD footage to SD before editing. FCP’s scaling isn’t great. Use Compressor and choose best for all quality choices (especially in the Frame Controls tab).

FCP6 can open and run FCP5 projects, but not vice versa. You didn’t say what codec you’d use to capture or what you are capturing. Is it SD or HD? FCP5 doesn’t have as many codecs as FCP6 (Prores for instance).

Also, you might try making each an Independent Clip after cutting the large clip into 3.

It’s very strange you’re not getting good level with that setup. I run a U87 into my Yamaha and have no issues with gain. Is there a pad switch on your mixer. Mine has one. If it’s there, maybe it’s turned on.

Normally, I don’t mess with the detail settings our our camera. I use Panasonic scene files. Haven’t have any issues with softness when the picture was properly focused. One time we lowered the detail to match a second camera that was much older and softer.
