I want to set-up a simultaneous editing workflow with a mac pro that is running final cut 6 and a G4 that is running final cut 5.

I only want to log and transfer on the G4, and do the main editing and labeling of sequences on final cut pro 6, they will be accessing the same hard drive for footage and saving to the same location. Will there be any compatibility issues with the files or other issues using two different versions, is this possible to do?

Otherwise I will have to update my graphics card and processor on the G4 to be able to run final cut pro 6 on it.

FCP6 can open and run FCP5 projects, but not vice versa. You didn’t say what codec you’d use to capture or what you are capturing. Is it SD or HD? FCP5 doesn’t have as many codecs as FCP6 (Prores for instance).

The footage was from the hvx-200 it is 720, 24P, the codec is DVC Pro HD, and I will only be rendering out on the final cut 6, I just want to see if logging and transfering on the final cut 5 will be any problem with what clips were logged when I need to edit and render to highest quality later on final cut 6. It seems like there shouldn’t be compatibility issues

If you Log & Transfer on FCP5 and open the project in FCP6 and point to the same scratch drive you should be fine. The media will be the same quality on both.
