    Hi

Can anyone help? I have imported video from files which were captured from iMovie, since Final Cut doesn’t seem to be able to capture video from a hard drive camcorder. The shot in widescreen and imported in widescreen. When editing everything appears in the Canvas as widescreen. So far so good! When I try to export using numerous different formats, the final exported video plays back in 4:3 format. Sometimes it will open in widescreen, but will have black either side of the video. I seem to have tried everything and cannot figure out while this is happening. I am only a novice at Final Cut Pro, so am I missing something. Can anyone help??

When in FCP look at your timeline settings (cmnd-0) is your timeline Anamorphic?

What are your export settings? Timeline settings?

On the ones that are 4:3, if everything is correct minus the aspect, then you can open in Quicktime, and view the Movie properties (cmnd-J) if you then select the video track you change what the playback dimensions are.

If you are working in SD, then you can set it to 854×480 and it will look correct.

But a lot depends on your timeline and export settings.

What kind of file do you want to end up with? What you are seeing is probably squeezed anamorphic. If you want a file that plays widescreen try Export Using Quicktime Conversion. Select Options>Video Settings which with certain formats gives you the choice of 4×3 or 16×9. If that option doesn’t appear there’s also a size button that will let you set the size. In Dimensions choose Custom and enter the size. Hope this helps.
