You should always use a different drive for your media than the drive that holds FCP. It could be an external drive or an internal one. Your drive should be formatted Mac OS Extended not journaled. While the OS can talk to a FAT32 drive, it’s size-limited to 4GB which isn’t good for longer programs. If you intend to cut HD then you probably want a RAID drive for your media. Look at the ads to the sides of the forum or search the forum and you’ll find many good solutions.

It’s always helpful to describe your system and what version of OS & FCP you’re using. What do you do want to do with your exported file?

We recorded in DVCPro HD and used one of the Cine scene files (#5 or 6, I think). It was the one with more contrast. We didn’t mess with and of the specific settings like detail. We do most of our keying in AE with Keylight. Our edit sequence was DVCPro HD 23.98 and the video out was AJA Kona 720p59.94. I’m no expert in PAL so maybe someone can jump in with that advice.

I think where you would run into trouble is if your program is played using a Dolby decoder. Then the LT RT will be decoded, but who knows what your new stereo material will sound like compared to that. But if the playback is strictly stereo, you should be able to mix old with new. Maximum size of a single-layer DVD is 4.7 GB. A dual-layer DVD stores 8.54GB. So to get the visual quality you want for a 2-hour program, see how big your encode is and then decide. Compressor and BitVice will both produce excellent results with surprisingly low bit rates. Definitely use 2-pass encoding. I use both those programs, but generally run some tests on difficult scenes with both, before deciding which one to use.

I think Imagine Products P2 Log (various versions) can repair P2 files. I know there are others, just can’t recall them right now. Try a search for “repair P2.”

I don’t know the 170, but it’s probably similar to our HPX500. We’ve used it for a number of successful green screen shoots. We’ve used 720P. 30P will look smoother than 24P. Keeping it progressive helps out as you don’t have to deal with interlace blur. I have no idea about slomo with SDI. I imagine it should work. Try it and let us know. I don’t think you need to rotate the camera (unless talent is going to jump in the air). But many people do it. I think it’s more trouble than it’s worth. It’s way more important to know how to light the green screen and pull the key properly.

You’re asking FCP to do something it’s not really designed to do – live production. However, I imagine there’s a way to capture an input from something like an IO-HD with timecode. I know it has LTC in and out. Maybe it can embed that in its feed.

As for the video gain being too hot, this sounds like an unterminated line or a capture card/box issue. I’ve never heard of FCP causing this kind of issue.

I’m not familiar with that camera. My only thought is capture the video and channel 1 audio first, and then just capture channel 2 audio without video. Hopefully, someone who knows the camera will know how to capture it all at once. Otherwise, it takes twice the time to capture.
