Post more about your setup, and project. What format is the source video? What are you using as a scratch disk, and (maybe the most important question) when was the last time you wiped your hard drive and performed a fresh install from the OS up?
Also post the format of the drives you’re using for scratch disks. Are they Mac OS extended?

Daisy chaining FW drives works OK to a point with ProRes… but a RAID setup with 4 or more drives would run circles around single FireWire drives. I like those sold by CalDigit, iStorage Pro, or G-Technology for the “middle priced” arrays. There are faster setups out there, but they get pretty pricey.
You might consider if you really need ProRes 422 or HQ and take look at the LT variety of ProRes. The files are a lot smaller, and are broadcast quality. Not good for sports or other fast action, but for talking heads and general B-Roll? Great.

Use the color corrector 3-Way to white balance the shots. Color would do a better job of it if you know the software.

Sure! Select everything in the Browser, then from the file menu, open the Media Manager.
Set the settings like this:
Copy, Turn off “Delete unused media”, select the destination (the external drive), and also select the option to create a new project file. When the copy is over, the new project file will be already connected to the copies. Give them this new project file and drive and you’re done!

Check the kHz of the recording itself. The camera or deck will report the bit depth. If it’s reported as 12 bit (usually in the viewfinder or on screen display), capture at 32kHz, 16 bit, not 48… if it’s 16 bit then it’s 48kHz…

The six core machine runs FCP 7 as fast as the 12 core machine does…
HOWEVER… nobody knows what FCP 8 will hold for us, and my guts say it will take full advantage of those 12 cores. Rumor has it that it’s going to be released very soon… might wait to see what it’s all about before you buy a new machine?
I’d buy an SSD for a startup disk, and load it with at least 12 gigs if not 16. and DO buy the upgraded display card ($200 or so?)

Add a Color Corrector 3-way filter to the clips. Then slide the sliders under the three color wheels until you get your results.

No, the only real problems show up when you try to recapture a project when the timecode associated with the first capture was actually wrong…
But it is a real problem if you need to recapture for whatever reason. Color will just access those same files… So shouldn’t have a problem with files that don’t really contain matching timecode with the camera masters.

FCP can only change a single clip at a time. However you can export a sequence of clips as a self contained movie, reimport it, and then apply a speed change to the whole sequence.

If you installed the QT player 7 from the Studio disks, you have the pro version of QT 7 and it will be normally in the Utilities folder.
Yes, you can export a still image sequence from it too. You can also export an image sequence directly from FCP using “QuickTime Conversion” in the export sub menu.
