Make subclips instead. Mark and in and out point in the VIEWER then type cmd+u. You can name these anything you want.

Make sure the exported movies are self contained.
It could be a problem with the media toward the end of the sequence too if it consistantly gets to the end then coughs…
When’s the last time you performed a clean installation? ie, erase your startup disk, and reinstall from the get go? That should be done with some regularity I think. Any time you’ve installed a new version of FCS, or a new OS.

If you want to connect to external video devices, as of this writing there’s little you can do with the15″. You need the 17″ for that with it’s express card slot. It remains to be seen if the Thunderbolt port will be enough down the line for this. But I’d go with the 17″ in any event just to get the screen space.
I’d add an SSD drive for the startup disk, and the RAM from Apple isn’t as expensive as it used to be, so I’d buy that from them too .. as much as you can.

Restart your computer.
Then try to open your project file again. If it won’t open, then open an autosave or your backup project file.

Probably the biggest difference is one has 2 ports, and the other only 1…

What format of HD are you working with? HDV? or?
Are you compressing the file before you upload?
Upload speeds are rarely as fast as the download speeds too… you might look into a faster connection…

Try copying the files from the card to a hard drive, then attempt the import.

Sort of sounds like a dropped frame issue, which usually points at a scratch disk just not quite fast enough to keep up. If this is the case, you might try exporting the sequence as a self contained movie using “current settings” and play that file out. Much easier for a drive to do. Or get faster drives of course… Don’t think more RAM is going to make much of a difference. FCP 7 can only address about 2.7 gigs of RAM before it disk caches. If you’ve 4 gigs or more and are only running FCP when this happens, it’s likely not a memory issue.

When you capture HDV, there is an option to NOT have it make a separate file for each take… It’s in the clip settings window of the log and capture window for HDV. Might try turning that off and give it another go.
You can also capture HDV as ProRes. Larger files, faster render though.

Run Software update to get to 7.0.3 for starters.
But you might just trash preferences and see if the error goes away… Apparently, it’s actually working OK, right?
