I’ve not heard of a mixer that outputs via firewire nor USB… but you could take any mixer and send it’s analog outputs to a digitizer like an ADVC-100 and turn the analog to 48 kHz… then send this signal down the firewire…

I’d think that this would be nothing but a headache… might work with a couple of stations, but more than that… ? you are talking about sharing media files right? I’d think that the windows machine would make a mess out of this. I know that PC formatted disks will work somewhat with FCP but the overhead involved reading the files with a Mac will probably kill the throughput. Wish I could say this works, but figure that it won’t.

  • Did you make it black and white or was it shot that way?

Try applying a desaturation filter. It’s called “Desaturate” and found in the “Image Control” set of video filters.

What are you using now software-wise? I really like the batch processing in Sorenson’s Squeeze, that would make things easy I think. Best QuickTime for sure… And they can do windows.

  • What format of HD do you need to deliver?

You should create a master in 24p DV then convert to it.

Have you set the render settings properly in the Sequence menu? Render selection, render all, etc…?

    Piece of cake.

Just partition a drive. load an os on it and then and try the beta. When you crash, you know you found a bug.

Hey, these guys have been building NLE’s for a very long time, and I’ll wager that this software could be quite keen for something or other…

April 2, 2005 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Up-res-ing

You can’t improve the picture from what you already have. Up rezzing isn’t going to make the picture better at all. In fact it can be argued it lowers the picture quality. i.e. you can’t make it better than the native format, so stay right where you are I’d say. About the only reason to up res something is that it’s mixed with higher quality footage, and/or you have a lot of computer generated graphics included…

When you set the first capture to be of “medium” quality, you really didn’t change anything at all… the slider doesn’t really affect anything with a firewire DV capture. In the case of DV, you are simply transferring the data, and not changing it’s quality at all.

After you’ve edited the anamorphic footage, create a new sequence that isn’t anamorphic, and simply drag the 16:9 sequence to it. Render it. Then it will become letterboxed on a 4:3 set playing back from tape.

If you create a DVD with this footage you don’t have to do this however, just turn on the 16:9 setting in Compressor or DVD SP 3, select whether or not you want it letterboxed or “pan and scanned”, and automatically it will be letterboxed on a TV set that’s 4:3, and will also fill the screen on a 16:9 set.
