Compressor “ERROR Unrecognized Request”
So I have researched this problem, and there are a few threads talking about it, but none that really give a solution that works.
The issue is that when I’m running compressor and trying to compress mov. files from FCP into Mpeg-2 files, it will get about halfway through processing a job (1 job with 2 targets i.e. audio and video) and it will stop right there. Checking the log reveals a repeated “ERROR Unrecognized request” message that repeats endlessly. What’s really happening is that either of the target jobs will stop at 99% complete. I tried arranging it so Compressor would process the audio ac3 file before the video m2v file to see if it had the same problem getting through an audio file, and it did. The ac3 stopped processing at 99% with the same message I encountered when my m2v files dead ended.
One possible solution I found offered was to erase the Batch Monitor pref files and the compressor.compressor pref files. I have done that, first by erasing the files altogether, and then, because they had come back, by opening the files in text editor and erasing the text within. Neither of these approaches work.
Somewhere else someone emphasized that you have to be sure to Reset Background Processing before you start a job so Compressor isn’t bogged down with old jobs. I do that every time, so that isn’t the solution either.
Finally, the possible solution that’s talked about the most is that this is a problem with Compressor dealing with Quicktime 7.4, so I followed the instructions on installing Quicktime 7.3 introduced here:

only to find that when I tried to open my version of Compressor (3.0.4) I was told that it needs at least Quicktime 7.4 to run.
So now I’ve got Quicktime 7.6.4 installed, and I feel like I’ve tried everything, and this is really driving me crazy. I have had a few jobs end up being successfully processed, but the success/failure ratio is like 1 in 10, and of course it takes 5 hours of processing, with Compressor slowing my computer down in the meantime, for me to discover that it has once again failed. Understandably frustrating. I’m losing my mind here, and any solutions, clues, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Also, before anyone asks/suggests, I am exporting mov. files from FCP and then bringing them into Compressor rather than using FCP’s “Export using Compressor.”

Make sure the exported movies are self contained.
It could be a problem with the media toward the end of the sequence too if it consistantly gets to the end then coughs…
When’s the last time you performed a clean installation? ie, erase your startup disk, and reinstall from the get go? That should be done with some regularity I think. Any time you’ve installed a new version of FCS, or a new OS.

Hi, thanks for responding. The process I’m working on is exporting 5 different FCP timelines, and then running each of them through Compressor to fit on its own DVD in what will be a 5 DVD set. I’ve run into the same problem of m2v or ac3 files sticking at 99% no matter which of the 5 timelines I’m working with, so I can’t imagine it could be a media problem.
In an earlier attempt to solve this problem, I had been exporting self-contained mov files from FCP for use in Compressor, but as this didn’t seem to help my success rate in Compressor, and because it was taking up a lot of hard drive space (self-contained movs for this being 40Gbs large), I went back to exporting and working with ref mov files. I have passed reference movs through Compressor successfully, so I assumed reference movs would be okay to work with and would save me some space. But if there’s even a sliver of hope that using self-contained movs might help my “successful compression batting average” here I will certainly give it another shot.
As for doing a clean installation of software, I have to confess that it has been quite a while. I should do that, maybe it will make this operation go a little more smoothly.

A clean install might fix you right up…
If you’re using DVD SP for the DVD production, you can compress using much the same presets there, so you might try that. Import a reference movie into it, and the encode settings are in the Preferences for DVD SP.
