Not sure what’s causeing this, but if you’ll post more info, I’ll bet we can figure it out…
Lagging, I presume, means it’s dropping frames?
Post what you’re using as a scratch disk for starters. Might just be the problem.

HD has many flavors… what is the compression setting for the sequence? HDV? DVCPROHD? Uncompressed HD? or? You’ll find a lot faster renders usually with ProRes or DVCPROHD settings… Also, those files are indeed big in size. I’d use Tiffs or PNG formats (not jpeg anyway) and size them down in Photoshop. You’ll also find that files about 1/2 that size will look every bit as good as the big ones if the DPI setting is, say 300 dpi in Photoshop.
Your external drive SHOULD be involved with a render. The files have to be read and stored to it during the render… right?

What are your sequence’s settings, and what was the source material’s codec and frame rate? (right click on a clip to get the properties, and right click on the sequence in the browser to open it’s settings.
Post what both windows reports.

Put what you want to be most of the frame on V1, the black and white matte you have on V2, then on V3 add the video you want to fill the white part of the matte with. Then change the composite mode of V3 to “Travel Matte Luma” by right clicking on it and selecting it from the Composite Mode submenu.

Try using a different device control setting. If it’s set to Apple FW, then try FireWire Basic instead or vice versa…

You don’t need to. It came with Studio 2… which you have, right? Can’t buy FCP by itself… FCP 6 was part of Studio 2 only.

You might be better off changing the speed of the audio clip.

Did you transcode the camera files to ProRes?
I think I’d export the wav’s as 48k aiffs, then try the multiclip with the prores files.

You should buy the 17. Not just because of the screen space, but because of the express card slot. It makes this laptop a LOT more expandable, and allows for your external video feed with the right box attached. The 15″ as of this writing, has no way to view externally on a relatively inexpensive setup. You could do it with a Firewire device such as an IoHD, but you’d not be able to also use a FW drive for the media…
You need the 17″…
Speed will incrementally improve with the 200 buck upgraded CPU too.
