Depends what you mean by “that faster” I suppose. It certainly is faster, but the i7 motherboards are more expensive in addition to the cpu being more expensive. Is it worth the money? I guess that’s up to you. If you’d like to see some benchmarks (including one about bluray disc creation in Vegas 8,) then check out https://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?b=2

Select Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 and Intel Core i7 920 then hit view comparison. That’ll give you an idea of how much faster the i7 is and if it’s worth the money to you personally. If you’re building the pc yourself, just look around for sales. Sales have a way of justifying my purchases for me.

I recently went with the i7 920 also and while it didn’t blow me mind, it is noticeably faster at rendering even under 32 bit WinXP than my e8400 was. I wouldn’t invest in Windows Vista with Windows 7 just months away. Stick with XP then go for 64 bit Win7 once it’s publicly released. There’s a free release candidate available now, which I’m going to give a try once I get a break in my work schedule. When I got the new cpu and mobo I went for 6gigs of DDR3 knowing that WinXP couldn’t recognize more than 3.2, but until I get a chance to install Win7 the rest is just going to waste.

  • Hey Chris, since you also use firewire preview let me ask you this. Vegas 4 & 6 worked fine for me, but I noticed that in 7 and 8 I’ve had an issue where if you just play straight from the timeline, after about 8 minutes I start to get more and more dropped frames. If I use Print to Tape it can play for two hours with no problem, and this is over already rendered video which plays fine in the Vegas preview window. Ever encounter anything like that, and if so were you able to fix it? I edit a lot of 5-7 minute pieces so it doesn’t cause a lot of problems for me, but was curious why it happened. If I alt+tab to another window then back to Vegas, it will play perfectly for another 7-8 minutes.

  • Well the 100mb limit shouldn’t be a problem. Will this sports site be recompressing whatever you give them to a 320×240 flash video for streaming anyway? Even if they don’t, try rendering out a WMV file at 640×480, about 1.5mbps for the video and stereo audio at 128kbps and see how it looks.

It’s hard when sites say they support mov and avi, because those are wrappers and not actual formats. So I’d hate to suggest you make one of them with a specific codec and then find out the site doesn’t support it. But if they support wmv then give that a try. I normally use 1280×720 mp4’s for the web but I know youtube has done a good job using my 1280×720 wmv’s too.

Use the Clip Browser software to select all the clips in the BPAV folder that you dragged to the external drive. Right-click on the clips and go to Export > MXF for NLEs. It’ll ask you where you want to save the files, then it’ll convert all the clips to .mxf files. Just drop those right into the Vegas timeline.

I posted this exact same problem a few days ago, and contacted Sony about it. Haven’t heard back from them yet, but am very relieved to hear other people are having the same problem. It means it isn’t just my specific setup, and increases the chance that Sony will rush to get it fixed.

Just so you know Chris, the adjust quality/size of video during playback for smooth framerate seems to prevent it from happening more often. With it enabled Vegas would lock up when i jumped around the timeline or hit play/pause frequently. With it disabled, vegas would lock up almost immediately.

At least in the meantime I can enjoy my free preorder gift in Vegas 8 😛

If you’re just working in standard definition, then yeah just render them out as NTSC DV avi files and you should be able to just drop them into the Vegas timeline.

  • Alright, forget my first post. Since Mike reminded where the setting was to turn off “Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback”, I’ve been playing everything at Preview(Full) quality and Vegas is locking up consistently when I get to any sort of 3d transition. So it doesn’t have to do with that Error program after all. It is most certainly linked to using my external Firewire device as a preview monitor. I tried using the Canopus DVC-100 and also passing through a Sony DSR-20 DVCam deck with the same result.

I guess I’ll troubleshoot this a little more and then try to get a hold of Sony. I just wanted to let you all know that my first post was incorrect.

See, that’s just ridiculous. I realize that there’s no way to beta test a product on as large a scale as releasing it to the public, and that sending Sony information about our crashes can only serve to benefit the users. But to implement background processes without making any mention of their existence or purpose to the user, especially when it can cause problems with the main program like in my case, is really sneaky. There are already a lot of people out there who still boycott Sony because of that rootkit fiasco. I just wish they’d be a little more transparent about things.

Ahh thanks Mike, that did it. I’ve had all my settings so similar since vegas 4 that I completely forgot there was a right-click menu over there, and kept expecting it to be in the program preferences. As for reading what’s new in 9, I was sold on it after that PDF file review on Edward’s site, and forgot to actually look at the official release from Sony. Thanks for the link, although I notice they make no mention of the ErrorReportLauncher.exe I recently posted about. Why are companies always trying to sneak software/features onto my PC without telling me?
