Also, if you happen to go for an i7 system with 3 channel ram, DDR3, then it’s most efficient to have 3 sticks of ram. Most places sell them in sets of 3. If you’re planning on sticking with windowsXP you could get away with 3gb since that’s all the system registers, but if you’re already on vista or windows 7, or just want to future-proof yourself then go for 6gb. You can go for more but it’s not gonna aid rendering much, the processor will handle that.

As a note to other users, just moments ago I got the e-mail from Sony to confirm payment information for the preorder I placed a few weeks ago, and Gmail automatically redirected it to the Spam folder. So if you’ve got gmail, make sure you check on that.
I just upgraded to an i7 920 system with 6gb ram this weekend in preparation. Now I just need to get the Windows 7 release candidate and hope that works well. I’ll be holding onto my 32bit WinXP partition just in case 🙂

If he can’t tell you specifics about the file types “mov or Avid” then I’m going to guess he doesn’t know a whole lot about the editing side of the production. When he says “Avid files” it’s probably because he knows they’ll work in Avid systems, and not because those are specific to Avid systems. They could be the mp4’s straight from the SxS cards, or the MXF files that Sony XDCAM Clipbrowser exports. If they are MXF files, try to get those instead of the mov’s you have. MXF files from XDCam will drop right into the vegas timeline and editing is a breeze.
And even if they’re the mp4 files the camera records, you can just download the clipbrowser 2.0 software and it’ll convert them to mxf for you.

I think I’ll hold off and try installing this on Vegas 9 Pro in a week. Hope he doesn’t have to rewrite it again. Hope my old Excalibur 5.6 still works too.

Yeah that was worth the read just for the explanation of the envelope nodules automatically being created in a selected area when you drag the envelope up or down.
I also like the ability to have still images added to the timeline automatically crop to match aspect ratio, something I’ve always used a script to do. My only improvement to that idea would be is if you could match aspect ration WITHOUT cropping. What I mean by that is if I have a vertical picture, have the border match the aspect ratio of the timeline without actually zooming it in to fill the screen. A lot of people might not have much use for that, but I sure would.
I’m still on Excalibur 5.6 though, so I hope that works okay in 9 also.

Yeah isn’t that odd? I always use 720p wmv files when I upload to youtube and they come out great.

I don’t know if this is related at all, but I have always found Window’s Media Player, and subsequently any other media players that just act as a an intermediary for window’s built in video playback, to be a little random. I haven’t tried in Vista but ever since XP first came out, I’ve been able to play the exact same file and have it look two entirely different ways. Almost as though there’s a brightness/contrast filter that sometimes gets applied to playing videos. If I set up a series of videos to play, or the same video playing several times in a playlist, it pretty much does it to every other instance like clockwork. I don’t know if that’s a common problem, but perhaps it could be what was affecting David? Either way, my solution has always been to not use (or at the very least not trust,) WMP.

I can’t say there’s a whole lot in this new version that I’ll take advantage of aside from native XDCAM EX browser. I’ll probably upgrade anyway just to have 32 and 64 bit versions, since I do plan to get Windows 7 when the final version comes out. I am interested to see what the gradient wipe transition looks like though.

I asked that very same question here a few months ago and someone directed me to SqirlzMorph. It’s free and worked perfectly for me. Just export as an avi and drop right into Vegas.
