    Hi All:

I received some footage from a director I was working with. He said he had Avid files or .MOV files – whichever I wanted – I chose .mov files since I don’t have avid.

Vegas won’t import the files. When I double click on the files to play them on my PC, at first I got a message telling me Quicktime needed additional software to play the files – so I clicked OK allowing the download. But even after that – double clicking on the files will play them with NO VIDEO, though I can hear the audio just fine.

I told the director about it and got this response:

*******”Uh Oh…Hmm, I’m not sure – you might need a certain codec…not sure which one it would be…I think it may be designed for Final Cut…Look up EX3. It’s from the SxS cards.*******

What does this mean? Is there any way for me to use these files? Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You would probably need a special codec. Normally, media from the XDCAM EX cameras shouldn’t be a problem for Vegas but FCP needs to convert them to a quicktime format to use them. Sometimes once FCP has had its hands on media they’re hard to use elsewhere.

The cameras should have included a disk with XDCAM Explorer software on it for both Mac and PC. This might help. Maybe. That disk also would have included a file converter for FCP.

Sometimes a qucktime file will play fine in their player but not in Vegas. One option might be to export it from the QT player in a usable format.

If they happened to save the camera-original media Vegas might have an easier time of it. In fact, Vegas Pro 9 is supposed to be able to use the camera-original files on the timeline. VP8 has to use MXF files.

I don’t have direct experience with this. Hopefully someone will come along with clearer information.

Open the file in Quicktime and type Ctrl+I to show the Movie Inspector. This window will tell you what codec you need. If it’s a codec that only ships with FCP on the Mac you are out of luck. If not, buy/download whatever codec it needs for Quicktime.

If he can’t tell you specifics about the file types “mov or Avid” then I’m going to guess he doesn’t know a whole lot about the editing side of the production. When he says “Avid files” it’s probably because he knows they’ll work in Avid systems, and not because those are specific to Avid systems. They could be the mp4’s straight from the SxS cards, or the MXF files that Sony XDCAM Clipbrowser exports. If they are MXF files, try to get those instead of the mov’s you have. MXF files from XDCam will drop right into the vegas timeline and editing is a breeze.

And even if they’re the mp4 files the camera records, you can just download the clipbrowser 2.0 software and it’ll convert them to mxf for you.

They are the MP4 files – he gave me all of the files – and he did find the link for me to download the clip browser, so I am going to use that and bring them in that way. Thanks so much to you and everyone here for the responses – much appreciated!
