  • Preview quality automatically changes in 9 Pro

Posted by David Shirey on May 12, 2009 at 8:19 pm

I finally got around to installing the 32 bit 9 Pro and after changing the color scheme back to my default, the next thing I noticed was that when I play back the timeline, the quality started changing on it’s own. I would hit a complicated transition or effect and the quality would drop from Preview(Full) to Preview(Half), and would stay at half until I paused it.

My question is, how do I change it back to where it keeps the quality but just drops frames when it can’t render something fast enough? I would normally prefer that behavior while editing, and I couldn’t find it in the Vegas preferences or the help file. Thanks in advance.

    From the 9.0 Readme
BTW, it’s recommended reading to see what else got changed that you aren’t aware of 🙁

Right-click the Video Preview window and select Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback if you want to emphasize frame rate during preview.
When the command is not selected, video quality is emphasized, and the frame rate will be reduced if necessary.

Ahh thanks Mike, that did it. I’ve had all my settings so similar since vegas 4 that I completely forgot there was a right-click menu over there, and kept expecting it to be in the program preferences. As for reading what’s new in 9, I was sold on it after that PDF file review on Edward’s site, and forgot to actually look at the official release from Sony. Thanks for the link, although I notice they make no mention of the ErrorReportLauncher.exe I recently posted about. Why are companies always trying to sneak software/features onto my PC without telling me?

Glad it worked for you David.
This is a new “feature” so I’m expecting to see a lot more “why is this happening?” over the next month or so 🙁

I searched the manual and couldn’t find anything about the Error Report Launcher.
There’s only been one thread about it on the Sony forum and one user had this to say about it:

Yes, error reporting is good but you should know about my first experience with it today. Vegas crashes within 5 minutes of me opening a media manager library with hundreds of clips. Error reporting dialogue pops up on the screen. Looks nice. Has a place to type optional comments. Has two boxes that you can check that essentially allow you to give your consent to sending information and data about the crash to Sony.

HOWEVER, the software then proceeds to compress over 50 mxf files from my library and send them back to Sony taking well over half an hour. As of matter of fact it is still going as I type. I guess it’s going to send my entire library back. This is ridiculous and will cause me not to want to use this feature in the future.

I finally gave up and Ctrl>Alt>deleted the sucker of my screen. Grunt.

See, that’s just ridiculous. I realize that there’s no way to beta test a product on as large a scale as releasing it to the public, and that sending Sony information about our crashes can only serve to benefit the users. But to implement background processes without making any mention of their existence or purpose to the user, especially when it can cause problems with the main program like in my case, is really sneaky. There are already a lot of people out there who still boycott Sony because of that rootkit fiasco. I just wish they’d be a little more transparent about things.

I had the same error message in the operating system and
software crashes when I render or exporter the material.
Discovered I had a file with a Mac move in time line and
after I take the project all came back to work
    normally.
