I hate to post three times in an hour but I thought this might be useful to any other 9 Pro, 32bit WinXP users. I have my space bar set to play/pause instead of play/stop, and I preview on an external monitor with a firewire device so I had that enabled. I quickly realized that if I start and stop playback in the timeline too quickly, the entire program just locks up and refuses to respond. After testing I noticed it only happened when the external preview device was enabled. While checking the windows task manager I noticed a program running called ErrorReportLauncher, which I noticed was in the Vegas folder.

I hate when programs start running other background processes without telling me, so I selected end task on it after I started Vegas up again. I don’t know if it’s some quality assurance thing or what, but when that program wasn’t running, I had no problem flicking playback on and off like a light switch. So if you’re having that problem at all, just manually close errorreportlauncher every single time you start up Vegas (thanks a lot, Sony.)

Also ZoneAlarm never prompted me to allow this program to access the internet, so it’s clearly not trying to get word back to Sony about why my program was crashing. But as long as it doesn’t crash when this thing isn’t doing whatever it does in the background, then I guess it’s no problem.

That seems to make a lot of sense David. I had similar lockups yesterday (cpu at 100%).
I thought it may be because I am XP SP2. In the process of upgrading to SP3.

Alright, forget my first post. Since Mike reminded where the setting was to turn off “Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback”, I’ve been playing everything at Preview(Full) quality and Vegas is locking up consistently when I get to any sort of 3d transition. So it doesn’t have to do with that Error program after all. It is most certainly linked to using my external Firewire device as a preview monitor. I tried using the Canopus DVC-100 and also passing through a Sony DSR-20 DVCam deck with the same result.

I guess I’ll troubleshoot this a little more and then try to get a hold of Sony. I just wanted to let you all know that my first post was incorrect.

While on the subject of external monitoring and v9, Has anyone on this forum had experience outputting through a Decklink Intensity Pro card using HDMI to an lcd TV screen? If it works, it would be a more cost-effective solution than most other options.
    Cheers

After upgrading XP to SP2, I am not getting any lockups.
What I did discover is that V8 is much nore efficient at rendering to MPEG2.
For me, render from SD to MPEG2 is regular work
I put 108 minutes of SD – PAL capture on timeline.
    Render to MPEG2,
    CBR, NTSC
    on V8, it took 95 minutes = 0.9 x real time
    on V9, it took 116 minutes = 1.06 x real time.

For me, working in SD PAL, V8 is much more efficient than V9.
