    Hello
I’m using Vegas 7 on a machine I built according to specification I found at the Videoguys site in 2007, which means I have a 2.4 GHZ duo core. I believe this is a little light to edit HDV and Cineform Codec. Vegas runs fine, but I can only use the Preview mode at 1/4 to correctly view the Cineform Neo HDV. And I simply can’t render a 75 minute film. I believe my processor is not powerful enough. I’m thinking about changing the mother board and processor and go with one of the new Intel I7 processor, probably the 920, but I’ll keep all my drive the way they are.

Any reason why it wouldn’t work? Any problem I should expect?
I’m running Windows XP. Of course I’ll go with the appropriate DDR3 Ram

I have read that others have been very pleased with this proc. I’m sure you will as well. You may want to look at going the 64 bit route and utilizing more ram.

I recently went with the i7 920 also and while it didn’t blow me mind, it is noticeably faster at rendering even under 32 bit WinXP than my e8400 was. I wouldn’t invest in Windows Vista with Windows 7 just months away. Stick with XP then go for 64 bit Win7 once it’s publicly released. There’s a free release candidate available now, which I’m going to give a try once I get a break in my work schedule. When I got the new cpu and mobo I went for 6gigs of DDR3 knowing that WinXP couldn’t recognize more than 3.2, but until I get a chance to install Win7 the rest is just going to waste.

    I appreciate the comments.
I think it makes sense. I’m going to go I7 with DDR3 but stick to windows XP Pro until Windows 7.
So, do you think it’d be a waste to go with a quad 9650, right? I might as well go with an I7 and the X58 motherboard and get ready for the new technology?
Is that I7 that faster than a quad 9650?
    Thanks

Depends what you mean by “that faster” I suppose. It certainly is faster, but the i7 motherboards are more expensive in addition to the cpu being more expensive. Is it worth the money? I guess that’s up to you. If you’d like to see some benchmarks (including one about bluray disc creation in Vegas 8,) then check out https://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?b=2

Select Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 and Intel Core i7 920 then hit view comparison. That’ll give you an idea of how much faster the i7 is and if it’s worth the money to you personally. If you’re building the pc yourself, just look around for sales. Sales have a way of justifying my purchases for me.

Here’s some results from the NEW Rendertest-HDV.veg thread on the Sony Vegas forum.

    QX6700: 120 sec.

    Q9650: 100 sec.

i7 920: typically 70 sec. but as fast as 49 sec.

Thanks for the two links, the one from Anantech and the Sony site.
The two sites tell me a different story.
From what I read by comparing a Q9650 and an I7 920 on Anandtech is that the I7 920 is not worth the money, since I need a new board and new memory, compared to the Q9650.

But from what Mike says, and what I read on the Sony site, the I7 might be faster? I have the feeling that actually one needs to go with one of the top I7 processors to really see a great improvement over the Q 9650.
    Basically for me it’s $270 to buy a Q 9650 Vs $675 to buy an I7 920 + board+ DDR3 Ram, Hum!

For the Q9650 are you just dropping a new CPU in your current system? If that’s all you need to do then I certainly wouldn’t shell out the money to replace everything else just for the difference between those two cpu’s.

Yes, I’m just changing the CPU that’s all!
    You might be right

I am about to upgrade from Vegas 8 to 9 and want to upgrade my machine as well.

What would be a good lower end quad proc to use? I plan to go 64 bit on the OS and was hoping I could use server 2008, but also have Vista 64 as well.

    Any good, fast cheap recomendations?>

    I7 over AMD?

what about a q6600 for run of the mill cheap with a 8 gb of RAM?
