Use a gradient in the Alpha channel. Alpha channel is much like the transparency except it doesn’t do refraction like transparency and it affects specular, reflection, environment etc (makes them disappear too)
Fresnel in the Luminance channel (invert the fresnel colors) since the edges are usually darker, with maybe a gradient or noise multiplied on the fresnel (in a Layer) if the tube is getting older and isn’t so evenly lit anymore – usually the ends stay bright and the middle loses a bit first but not always. Then maybe subtle blue or yellow in the luminance/color channels depending on the color of the light. A quick try
Cloth can turn on and off at the frames you want but by default it’s set to all the frames of the timeline and that is set when you first apply the cloth tag. So it sounds like you applied the tag when your timeline was set to 300 and you later extended it to 750. Whether that’s the case or not, go to Cloth Tag/Tag and uncheck Auto and set the Start and Stop points where you want.
no folders, use Layers (in the Materials/Edit menu for the different interfaces and by right-clicking on materials to add to and remove from layers etc)
I don’t know of any magic formula (the look you want changes things) other than transparency with refraction and some reflection. Fresnel in the transparency can be good since water is more transparent if you are looking directly into it rather than at an angle, that is more of a big body of water thing though.
Try dissecting some of the shaders that are out there, you might want to look here https://www.maxon.net/~deepshade/ the shaders here were done mostly a long time ago but they are still good as examples even if they might be built differently now.

That would give a full twist, I think. You would need to go Y max (or min) on one side and Y Middle (0.5) on the other side to get the 1/2 twist a mobius needs – it also leaves you with one twisted poly that has to be deleted and replaced by hand.
