I tried re-creating the issue you are having with some XDCam clips from a project I am currently editing to no avail. If I think of anything else I will post.

Try setting it to ALL FRAMES instead of CURRENT FRAME in FCP. (Apple F12) If your screen goes black hit it again and it will toggle between viewing ALL FRAMES and nothing.
Then REFRESH VIDEO DEVICES (Option F12)

both commands are located near the bottom of FCP’s VIEW menu.

    good luck,

I edit XDCam HD Multiclips every so often and the only thing that throws me off is the Sequence settings being off or media is shot on different camera formats.

If all clips are the same format try laying individual clips on V1 and V2 to see of they also turn red. If so the Sequence settings are probably wrong.

If your media is in different formats I usually multiclip the 2 cameras that are the same and edit that first. Then I go through a slightly painful insert edit of the 3’rd camera’s shots.

Also make sure that all the camera’s were set to the same frame rate, drop or non drop frame rate etc…
I once had the pleasure of putting together a 25mbps and 35mbps shoot because one of the 4 cameras were not properly set.

    good luck,

If you can go with the Kona 3’s do it. We have 6 FCP suites, 3 with Intel Machines and when we originally configured the newer machines with some of the other cards there was always something more that was needed from them so we went with the more expensive Kona 3’s. The Kona 2’s in the older machines are still in full force and the Kona 3’s in the Intel machines have done everything needed of them. A great card. As for the rumor sites, I check them often even tho nothing is for sure there. Apple is good at keeping secrets. Problem is some other editor friends of mine have gone to Adobe for lack of FCP 7 or FC Suite 3 news. Oh well, too bad for them.

You may have a glitch on your tape. Have you been able to scroll through the problem area frame by frame?

If there is a glitch on the tape you may be able to get around it by:

    1. in user preferences uncheck Abort capture on dropped frames. This will give you a visual problem if the video/audio can’t be covered in post over the dropped frame. You may also have a problem mastering.

    2. in audio video settings set your device control preset to Non-Controllable Device and record by manually pressing play on the deck and then clicking Capture now in FCP. You won’t be able to recapture correctly but you can capture now.\

    good luck

I think I remember seeing that on FCP 5.0.3 when receiving a project from another computer.

If I remember correctly we would do a Save Project As to another drive, that did the trick for us.
Also make sure there is plenty of space available on your Capture Scratch Drive.
Also check to see if FCP is automatically saving your projects to the Autosave Vault.

    System>Users>Documents>Final Cut Pro Documents>Autosave Vault.

look for your projects name and open the folder. depending on how often you have autosave set in Final Cut you should see some files from today in there. Open the newest one if possible.

    good luck

  • Here is something that has saved me in the past. Especially when I receive a new project from another editor and my system runs fine, but then…..

For some reason I have noticed render files appearing inside my FCP Applications folder. Where are your renders going? I am sure Apple would not recommend everyone just checking out what is in there so be careful checking it as such.

    go to.

    your Applications folder
right click on the FCP icon and click on Show Package Contents
    double click on MacOS
If there is a Render Files folder in there open it to see of there are some stray render files from your current project in there. If so, move them to the trash but don’t delete yet. Re-open FCP and see if your timeline works. If so Delete the Render Files from the trash.

I currently edit around 2 30 minute effects heavy projects a month and numerous short form ones. When my system is misbehaving I delete prefs, repair permissions and check that folder in Applications>FCP. this makes my mac happy.

    good luck

February 11, 2009 at 11:33 pm in reply to: Explain: Following Rendering Problem

Usually under Sequence>Render I only have Needs Render (Video) and For Playback (Audio) checked when I am editing along and I use the shortcut Apple R to render what is selected as RED (Unrendered) in my timeline.

Under Sequence>Render All I usually have them all checked and only use the shortcut Option R when I take a break, go to lunch or have more time to let everything render. I then click Shift A to select all clips in the timeline then Option R to render everything in it. Most of our clips have Color Correction, Moves, Resizes and if I hit Option R each time I will be spending more time rendering and less time working.

Not being able to render may also occur because of a number of different things.
Here are some that come to mind.

If you have in and out marks on your timeline and your clip is outside the markers and not selected, it will not render.

If the colored bar in Sequences>Render is not checked, that color line in your sequence will not render.

I just highlight all clips I want to render and hit Apple R. As long as the color I want to render is checked in Sequence>Render I should be good to go.

Thats all I can think of for now,

    Good luck,

    Victor

If you look at the top of the Canvas Window you will see 3 oval buttons.

1st lets you adjust window size.

2nd lets you Sync your playhead or not.

3rd lets you adjust what you see in your canvas.

if you click on the center one and set it to OPEN you will notice that whatever your player is on in the timeline (when stopped) will appear in the Viewer. If you then click on the filters tab in the viewer you will then see the effects that are used in that clip without double clicking. By hitting the next edit key you can jump from edit to edit and see what effects are in each clip.

    good luck

January 21, 2009 at 8:22 pm in reply to: Glitches in Video when adding Transitions

    Final thoughts,
    1. If you have rendered effects on the clips that are butted against the transition, try un-rendering them, either by un-clicking the effect and then clicking it back on. Then Re-render it with the transition. See if that fixed the problem.

    2. Instead of using a transition on that troublesome clip try using nodes instead. In the bin, right click on the sequence and click on “Sequence Settings”, then click on the “Timeline Options” tab. Turn on Show Keyframe Overlays.

On your timeline you should see lines appear at the tops of each video clip. Move one of the problem clips up to layer V2. Extend, drag, that clips head and tail ends about 1 second over the clip below it. Type P on the keyboard to bring up your pen tool. Click on the black line as close to the edge of the clip on V2. Then click on it again about 1 second in or less. Pull down to zero the node that is closest to the edge of the clip (this should be the first one you made). Now you should have a transition from V1 to V2. What you have done is change the Opacity of the clip on V2 from 0 to 100 at the beginning and end revealing the clip underneath on V1. This is a bit, if not very tedious way of creating a transition, but it has helped me a few times in the past

    good luck,

    Victor
