  • [Scott Clements] “have since learned that in a lossy codec the entire frame is recompressed and that in an uncompressed codec, only the affected parts are.”
    That’s true.
Whatever thing you put on a FCP sequence is rendered as 444, so when you render 8/10b Uncompressed, the missing chroma samples are interpolated, but when you export as 8/10b Unc, the same chroma that has been interpolated is discharged, so you end up with the same 422/YCbCr values that you started.

    But I’m with Shane.
ProresHQ is not Uncompressed but was designed to stand a multi-generations workflow without visible degradation.

If you are having an issue with different applications, I would think more about a problem on the system than a problem with the applications.
Try repairing your system Permissions, and if that doesn’t fix it, think about running DiskWarrior or TechTools.

March 26, 2013 at 11:11 am in reply to: flicker on old footage

What I see is some frame blending that looks very ugly.
I guess introduced on the slow down and may be by a wrong managing of data bases.
Try keeping the speed at 75%, but uncheck “Frame Blending” on the speed window.
Which is the time-base of the archive footage, and which is the sequence time base?

Try changing your original sequence codec by Prores and set “RENDER ALL YUV IN HIGH PRECISION”.
Otherwise the rendering will be done in 8bRGB.

Guide: How to import videos files from Canon C300 to FCP X?”

    Please, not advertising here.
This thread is about “flash effects”; nothing related to Canon or MFX files.

March 25, 2013 at 5:53 pm in reply to: which format to use

You need your sequence to be: 720×576 Pal Pixels, 25fps, Upper-field First. Anamorphic or not, up to your footage. Set the compressor Pros HQ or Prores 422, and “Render in High Precision”.
You can open a DV Pal sequence and change field order and the codec & Render option.

  • [Dave LaRonde] “Tell you what: Send the file but also send along the precise timing from FCP of what it SHOULD be. If it matches, you’re good and you haven’t lost any time.”
    As Dave says.
If they work OK in FC, don’t worry about QT Player.

March 22, 2013 at 5:54 am in reply to: Possible to install prores 422 in fcp6?

The fact that is not available as a preset doesn’t means that Prores is not installed.
Do you have Prores as an option when exporting a movie from QT?
    It should be there.
    Prores comes with FCP.6.

[Todd Dayton] “1. Edit and output in PAL, convert to HD, add titles and graphics to HD version, output”
I think this is the best workflow.
Use your best available tool for the upscaling.

  • If you are sure that the footage is Progresive, check it as NONE on the Browser.
