I don’t understand the problem.
You create your text on the text generator window (Viewer) and drag it to a track on above the nest.
Position it where you want to start.

No really.
Motion uses the FCs settings when you “Send to Motion” from FC, but when you start a project in Motion, Motion uses his project settings.– In the “Project Properties”, set Render in 16 or 32b (Float)
– In the Export Window (Options), set Prores as the export codec.Then export a self-contained movie and bring it to FC.

You probably have been working with dropped frames in the past but you haven’t noticed.
Uncheck “Warn next time on dropped frames” and relax.

You don’t need any hardware.
Use MPGstreamclip (free) to convert the MPEG-2 files from the DVD to a format that you can edit in FC.
The best options are Prores and 8b Uncompressed.
Copy the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive and run MPGStreamclip.
If you can’t copy the VIDEO_TS folder on your computer, probably the DVDs are protected. In that case you will need something like MacTheRipper to copy the folder.

You shouldn’t have problems with H264.
Do you have QT.7 installed?

Matroska (same than QT or MP4) is a container that can hold different codecs.
You don’t only need the application to open the container (QT&Perian), but also the component to read the codec.
Perian install a comprehensive library with the most common components/codecs (see “About Perian” in the Perian Control Panel), but not everything is there.
Can you play the movie with VLC?

Nobody gonna watch the film on your waveform monitor, and anyway the sides of the picture are cropped by the TV sets on broadcasting.
