Perian not opening a Matroska file (.mkv)
I know I’ve used Perian to open .mkv videos before in both QT and Compressor to make into an Apple Pro Res file that my FCP7 could handle but for some reason I was just given an .mkv file that I keep being told that both Quick Time, Compressor, and even Streamclip cannot read. I’ve checked that my Perian is up to date and have even tried restarting the computer.
Has anyone run into this where Perian is able to help QT play an .mkv file and not others? I can get it to play in VLC but I was hoping to change the codec on it. Any suggestions?

Matroska (same than QT or MP4) is a container that can hold different codecs.
You don’t only need the application to open the container (QT&Perian), but also the component to read the codec.
Perian install a comprehensive library with the most common components/codecs (see “About Perian” in the Perian Control Panel), but not everything is there.
Can you play the movie with VLC?

Yes. I can play it in VLC.
I used VLC’s media information and it says that the codec is H.264 – MPEG 4 AVC
Which I thought were some of the codecs Perian used. Guess I need to do a bit more digging.

You shouldn’t have problems with H264.
Do you have QT.7 installed?

I have both 7 and 10 and have tried both and neither of them can read this file.
