wait, i have to reply to myself here. it’s the other way around. filters are always applied before motion, so you shouldn’t have this problem. but if you ever have the opposite problem my suggestion will probably come in handy. 🙂

apply deinterlace to the source clip, nest it and scale the nest. the same technique can be used to solve many similar problems.

you got two replies that i frankly don’t understand. workflow-wise they are right but of course any kind of cropping and stretching enlarges the pixels and yes, unfortunately you’ll always lose some resolution. it’s not that bad though so just live with it.

oh, one more thing. i know about mpeg streamclip’s demux to unscaled m2v but fcp refuses to import m2v files larger than a couple of gigabytes and mine are full tapes (12gb). feels like 1996 but it’s just how it is.

i know, but it takes up insane amount of other system resources than disk space. i doubt if you can even get realtime *playback* on a powerbook, much less any realtime effects…
thanks for your suggestions. as for hdv timecode, what’s the problem exactly. i understand how recapturing could be a problem but what problems can i run into recompressing all media using media manager?

fcp can for sure, just drop your ntsc footage on a pal sequence. the quality from the built in conversion isn’t great though, but a plugin like the “g standards conversion” will do the trick.

great plugin. i use the mask shape filter on a slug to create such mattes, but this is of course quicker. how about a drop down for 1.85, 1.78, 2.35 and so on?

or deinterlace it of course. or blend fields. or “reduce flicker”. check out my plugins (https://www.mattias.nu/plugins/) for better versions than the built in options.

ffmpegx is a good free (shareware) tool. the qt mpeg-2 playback component works too.
