so, i see this issue has been discussed a few times, but not this particular question. somebody told me that if i use media manager to create an offlinert, or even dv copy of my hdv footage i won’t be able to accurately reconnect it to hdv later. according to him i’d have to capture in apple intermediate in order for that workflow to work. any truth? it doesn’t seem that far fetched considering the gop issue, but it seems like somebody should have solved it? we share one g5 fcp5 station at work but offline everything on our laptops so this is how we’ve always done it in the various sd formats.

(actually i don’t use offlinert but my own pjpeg settings and the dc30 rt enabler, but that’s beside the point)

I don’t work in HDV, but would “guess” that using the intermediate codec would be the way to go here..

    The answer is the same.
The only consistent solution to avoid the offline / online issues with Long GOP HDV content is to dupe dupe HDV tape to HDCAM or DVCPROHD so that you can get actual individual i-frames and TC, then when you digitize from the new “dupe” masters you will not get in to the Timecode offsets and lack of individual frames in the the HDV originals.

Gary’s right… Either work at full online quality from the start, or dupe your tapes to an iframe format.

The question is, why not just use HDV native from the start? Believe it or not, it takes up less drive space than SD DV. DV uses about 13gb per hour — HDV is only about 11.5gb per hour.

Ya Know? You’re right. It’s low data rate should play on FW 400 powered all day long. (and space is getting cheaper)…

i know, but it takes up insane amount of other system resources than disk space. i doubt if you can even get realtime *playback* on a powerbook, much less any realtime effects…

thanks for your suggestions. as for hdv timecode, what’s the problem exactly. i understand how recapturing could be a problem but what problems can i run into recompressing all media using media manager?
