    hey,

i have a bunch of hdv streams in m2t containers from before the quicktime hdv codec and i was wondering if it’s possible to convert them to hdv mov’s without recompression? i’ve edited in the intermediate codec (generated with mpeg streamclip) but now i’m considering a film out and would like to online from the earliest generation possible and i don’t have the disk space nor computer horsepower to convert everything to uncompressed. i can of course recapture but since the m2t files don’t have timecode it sounds a bit tedious to resync everything*. thanks a lot.

*) another solution might be to use cinema tools or something to recreate the tc using a known offset. how would i do that?

oh, one more thing. i know about mpeg streamclip’s demux to unscaled m2v but fcp refuses to import m2v files larger than a couple of gigabytes and mine are full tapes (12gb). feels like 1996 but it’s just how it is.

    hi, Matt

first off, let me say thanks for the great plugins you make.

    now, onto business…

i suspect the best solution would be to convert the m2v files to an HD format.
    if space is a premium,
i think your best bet is to convert to DVCPro HD using MPEG Streamclip.

if you did “whole-file” converts originally in MPEG Streamclip, then do whole file converts again.
do a quick double check that the TC’s match, between the old and the new files,
then you’ll be able to do a simple re-connect.

if you didnt, do “whole-file” converts then you might have to eye-match 🙁
although i’m sure there’d be a (slightly) better way

maybe you need to bite the bullet and go and get some more drive space?

    cheers,
    nick

thanks, that’s pretty much what i’ve done already but using the intermediate codec rather than dvcprohd. what i want is to avoid this generation loss. as for going uncompressed do you realize that means around 450gb of storage for each 60 minute hdv tape? that’s a bit more than just biting the bullet since i have 6 tapes. 😉
