December 18, 2007 at 8:02 pm in reply to: Missing render files – is it fixed in FCP 6.0.2 ?My systems seemed to have been corrected with this issue. One is a Mac Pro and the other an older G5.
Now, this annoying snapping feature is killing me.

[dThadd] “What is the best way to get footage into FCP from an XDCAM deck? right now I am using
Filp4Mac Editcam and all the time-code is getting stripped in the process. I’d like my time-code to survive the conversion, is there another solution out there? “You are using Final Cut Pro? Why would you use the Editcam software to import Sony XDCAM HD? Why not just use the Sony Transfer software?
[dThadd] “Are there any major advantages to converting 8-bit, Long-GOP MPEG-2 4:2:0, to 10-bit, Apple Pro res 4:2:2 HQ for color correction and compositing? Or would it make more sense to stay in 8-bit and just use Pro Res 4:2:2 when bringing footage from my XDCAM HD Deck? “
As for the workflow, make it whatever you wish. We capture everything the old way of log and capture because we need detailed info on our clips and we capture most everything to DVCProHD for space and compatibility with others. Sometimes when we produce commercials, we stay XDCAM HD through the whole process.
The reason for transcoding… Well, XDCAM HD doesn’t not hold up well at all in AfterEffects. Not that we do alot of AfterEffects but we do from time to time.

Shane…
Your P2 archives would be best using BluRay. I have had four LaCie drives go down on me this year with the oldest drive being three years old. This happens when drives aren’t be used regularly.
BluRay has a shelf life longer than 50 years. Lots more permanent than any tape based system to date or SATA drive.
Food for thought…

Yes, it is rather annoying.
I’ve noticed that its on when you don’t need it and off when you do. Meaning, when I drop a clip onto my timeline, snapping is off. If I look at my toolbar at the top of my sequence window, it shows that snapping is on. Now, if I need to shift a clip up or down the timeline, its on.
Wow…. it sure is giving me a headache.

Looks like LaCie is your option for BluRay at the moment.

December 10, 2007 at 9:07 pm in reply to: Quickest way to transfer XDCAM HD to sony HDV?This is easy as long as you have the on-board option for the F70 deck. Its called the Sony PDBK-102 HDV Input/Output Board for the PDW-F30 and PDW-F70 XDCAM VTRs.
You can find this at B&H Video Photo’s website:

Strange….
I haven’t seen that yet. I’ve used the new 2.1 software many times, including using it on the new EX1 demo that we did two days ago.
