To update or not update…. That is ALWAYS the question.
Well, I would have to say that all software has bugs and it depends on the bugs that are getting you and if those bugs are listed in the fixes. Case in point… Nesting sequences would loose render files. The latest update was supposed to fix this bug, and it did to a point.
If this is your issue and its keeping you from getting the job done in a fair amount of time, maybe an upgrade it the thing for you. If the bug doesn’t fix your issues, maybe you need to wait until the next update that does.
We live in a ever changing world that requires us to update or stay behind. The answer is within your organization. Consider all of the aspects before jumping in.

First thing that I have to ask is… What is your system specs? Computer, memory, drives, etc.?
The reason I ask is that with the newer Mac Pro systems, most people have the memory installed improperly for FCP. In a Mac Pro system, memory MUST be installed in matched pairs across the memory risers, and also the memory SHOULD be from the same manufacturer. The memory should also be installed in 4 gig, 8 gig, or 16 gig sizes. Anything other than this will cause FCP to go bonkers.

BUT….
Hardware conversion is sooo much better. Do you have a PDW-F70 deck? If so, it will down-convert for you, on the fly. It can downconvert to letterbox, center punch, or anamorphic. You would want the center punch. A hardware capture card like the AJA Kona series or Blackmagic series can also do this.
I’ve been doing this for the past year and a half, now, without any problems. Nesting sequences can get you into trouble in all sorts of ways. And Compressor can downconvert but at a cost of quality loss.
For your issue, samahcinema, I would create two sequences. One for HD and one for SD output at HD resolution. This way you can have an original HD version and then an SD version for broadcast. Somewhere dow the line, someone will want your program in HD and you’ll have it when you need it.

This has been true for a long, long time.
Make several projects to keep them smaller and create a final project to bring all of your sequences together.
Shane Ross has a DVD here on the COW that deals with this. It would be a great purchase for you to look at.

Well….
Sounds like you have too much media spread across too many firewire drives. When using firewire, you really need to organize your media to one drive, if at all possible. The reasoning is that when you spread media across drives, you end up spreading your buss bandwidth pretty thin.
The best thing to do is to either consolidate your media to one drives (your fastest drive) or purchase a larger drive and use the others for backup. Drives are cheap today, so don’t try to cut your budget by getting smaller drives.

Can I ask? Why MPEG2?
Are you compressing for the Internet or are you making DVDs?
Usually artifacts in MPEG2 is caused by low quality settings. MPEG2 has never been a very clean format as much as H.264. But, if you are doing this for DVD, let Compressor do your compressions using the DVD settings of your choice.

Well…. I see it this way.
2.0 didn’t work very well at all. If you check Sony’s website, you’ll see that the full released version is 2.1. And this very issue that people are seeing has been fixed, at least from what I have witnessed on our systems.
