  • To Update or Not Update… Rules?

Posted by Colleen Kessler on January 2, 2008 at 3:50 pm

We have a discussion going on at work about when to run updates, or to not bother.

One rule of thumb is.. if it aint broke, don’t fix it.
The opposite has gotten us before, where we didn’t update and just kept pluggin along with random problems and crashes. Causing frustration and wasting billable time.

We have had a month downtime and I suggested it was a good time to update ONLY my system to start, cloning the drive first, and once we saw everything was okay we’d proceed.
After two weeks of working fine on the 6.0.2/7.3 update I am all of the sudden seeing problems that are being blamed on the update, just because it appears easier to blame it on that than actually troubleshoot and figure it out.

What do all of you consider your own “Rule of Thumb” regarding software updates?

    Thanks

To update or not update…. That is ALWAYS the question.

Well, I would have to say that all software has bugs and it depends on the bugs that are getting you and if those bugs are listed in the fixes. Case in point… Nesting sequences would loose render files. The latest update was supposed to fix this bug, and it did to a point.

If this is your issue and its keeping you from getting the job done in a fair amount of time, maybe an upgrade it the thing for you. If the bug doesn’t fix your issues, maybe you need to wait until the next update that does.

We live in a ever changing world that requires us to update or stay behind. The answer is within your organization. Consider all of the aspects before jumping in.

I never update unless its absolutely necessary.

I’m willing to live with certain issues, if I hear
others complaining about more issues on the new update.

For now, I’m avoiding 6.02 just as I avoided 5.1.4

I went from 5.04 directly to 6.0 because the improvements
    were huge.

I “might” update my clone drive when 6.05 or another 2 updates
come from apple and see how it plays out. The next update that “fixes a lot of issues” will increase my confidence in doing any update at all.

A lot of folks get themselves into trouble because they update “just to update” and don’t really consider the consequences of the action. I learned long ago that patience is really a virtue in regards to this. So I’m not in any hurry at all.

I absolutely will not be updating to panther any time soon though. There’s just no justifiable reason to do so.
