Are there any major advantages to converting 8-bit, Long-GOP MPEG-2 4:2:0, to 10-bit, Apple Pro res 4:2:2 HQ for color correction and compositing? Or would it make more sense to stay in 8-bit and just use Pro Res 4:2:2 when bringing footage from my XDCAM HD Deck?

Also, What is the best way to get footage into FCP from an XDCAM deck? right now I am using
Filp4Mac Editcam and all the time-code is getting stripped in the process. I’d like my time-code to survive the conversion, is there another solution out there?

You are using Final Cut Pro? Why would you use the Editcam software to import Sony XDCAM HD? Why not just use the Sony Transfer software?

As for the workflow, make it whatever you wish. We capture everything the old way of log and capture because we need detailed info on our clips and we capture most everything to DVCProHD for space and compatibility with others. Sometimes when we produce commercials, we stay XDCAM HD through the whole process.

The reason for transcoding… Well, XDCAM HD doesn’t not hold up well at all in AfterEffects. Not that we do alot of AfterEffects but we do from time to time.

    Hi,
i’m not very friend of transcoding to a higher codec when capturing. Even to capture in ProRess HQ means a re-compression of your movie. And what you get? A generation lost ad a bigger file.
i think that many people that works with uncompressed formats try to capture everything with those codecs. This do not necessarily helps, but some times do the opposite.
The filters that really can helps you to improve the look of your 420/411 clips (Chroma rebuilding) works better in the original footage.
Capture and edit in your original format, then set your sequence with a better codec just before exporting. I think this is the easiest and most effective way to work with “low-chroma” formats.

Use the Final Cut Pro/XDCAM Transfer software from Sony – it’s free (link below)

As for converting footage, I don’t see the advantage in recompressing. You will lose the work-flow benefit of XDCAM, make huge files, slow down playback and see little benefit.

    Hi
I’m using sony hvr z7 camcorder: it records solid state files into mpeg2

The sony software only allows you to get the whole file into fcp7 through log and transfer

Is it possible to convert mpeg2 to apple pro res so fcp recognises this and can then edit it. If so how do you convert the mpeg2?

    Help appreciated
