  • Will FCP5 be able to “see” projects edited with FCP6?

Posted by Sophie876 on December 7, 2007 at 5:41 pm

    Hi everyone…

    Here’s an easy one.

I’m editing on FCP 6. A friend of mine just did a movie trailer in FCP 5. She wants me to finish it. Fine.

She’ll bring the project and media over on a Firewire Drive.

When I attempt to open her 5 project in 6, FCP will ask me if I want to make it work in 6. I’ve always answered yes because I never wanted to revert to earlier versions.

This time, I do. I want to finish the trailer on my computer, then give her the project back on her Lacie drive to take home.

Here’s the question – Will she be able to access my work, the finished trailer, in FCP 5 though I worked on it in 6?

    Thank you so much.

    The easy answer? No.

The more difficult answer? Yes. Only if export an XML to open in V5. SOme effects/codecs will not be backward compatible.

The short answer is no. Projects opened and saved in v.6 can’t be opened in v.5.

But you can export an XML file of your version of the project, include that on the client’s hard drive and she will be able to open that in FCP 5. It’s my understanding that most, if not all of your changes will be mirrored in the XML file. Of course, things that won’t translate are filters etc, that are specific to version 6 won’t transfer over to FCP 5.

    Hope this helps.

I’m pretty sure “carp” is a fish. 🙂

    Good luck with your edit.

Carps come from gold fish, so remember they at least started from beauty.

Don, we are totally in sync today. And to totally take this to geekish heights…we must be hooked to the same blackburst generator.

Agreement. LOL Now I have to leave the COW haven and go pick up my new geeky PMW EX1.

Actually, all gold fish are carp, but not all carp are goldfish. Goldfish are members of the carp family.

BTW, in the Czech Republic, the traditional Christmas dinner includes the carving of the carp, just as we carve our turkey. I suspect tarter sauce may replace our cranberry sauce, but you never know…

Now that’s freaky. I was about to say nearly the same thing. I have a Slovak friend who has carp for Christmas. I wonder if they have a Creative Carp community over there.

    Congratulations.

You have finally won the competition to link FCP to the Slovak tradition of Christmas Carp. Unfortunately due to the original terms of the Cow Charter, the entire site will have to be shut down, and instead host a ‘Carp is for life, not just for Christmas’ public information site.

    I hope you’re happy.
