Hey Kenneth,

I have just purchased a bundle of Magix software, including Vegas Pro Suite on a perpetual licence (and Sound Forge + Movie Maker).

Like you, I am looking to use it on smaller projects + support those of my corporate/NGO clients that does not want to work on a subscription.

I can see that you’ve just posted the same question on the VEGAS Magix forum, although it makes no difference to me, I’ll be interested in the answer.
A qualified guess is that many of the plug-ins might only have worked for up to HD, or even 4K, and with the platform going up to 8K, they might have retired it for that reason.
I could also be that they have built the old “add-on” effects into the main software.

Do keep in mind, that just back in August, Adobe product marketing team retired all of their PPro legacy effects and told their customer base to buy plug-ins that do much of the same.
No, they did not specify what effects one should purchase to replace the Legacy effects…

Hey David,

Going back 20-years, I used ReVision DeFlicker to save a feature film that was going from HD to 35mm projection. The black levels, in a coal mine, was constant through a shot. Including, where we had to use Twixtor to slow some of the progressive footage down.

Hey John,

Sadly, there is little or no investment in Audition by Adobe.

Have you got Premiere Pro?
Maybe the audio noise reduction in there will sort it out for you – I know, one would have thought that the audio editing software would get first upgrade on audio tools – but not in Adobe land.

Alternatives are Izotope RX Elements (VST), although you can go big:

and it will sound like the file included below.

If you are not a subscriber to Adobe, convert to audio file format like MP3 (which I used), and it should be free for you to use.

Hey Gerry,

I would have expected your slightly older BorisFX to still work in the latest version of Premiere Pro.

However, I seem to remember Adobe moving the hierarchy of the plugin folder around, and although you have re-installed both. It could be that the installer with the older version of BorisFX needs to be pointed in the right direction.

Based on that info I asked, and Google A.I. gave this explanation:

The default directory for Premiere Pro plugins on Windows is C:/Program Files/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore. However, as of version 22.0, the directory has been renamed to \Plugins. Premiere Pro will still attempt to load plugins from the old directory for the time being.

Plugins for Premiere Pro are shared with other Creative Cloud applications, such as After Effects, Audition, and Adobe Media Encoder.

You can also manage your plugins and extensions on the Adobe Exchange website. To do this:

1. Sign in to the Adobe Exchange website
2. Select Manage
3. Select Creative Cloud extensions
4. Select the plugin or extension you want to find
5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the Where to find it section

I would go for a manual install of Boris FX, if possible, and then point it to the “new” Adobe folder.

Hey Brett,

How old is “old”, as if it is FCPX, if you can find someone with the version that matches, you should be able to install it – in theory. And then open the libraries. There are smarter people around than me, who might be better help, or even have the setup to do it for you.

If you are not too worried about the project data, but just need to rescue the footage.
Using the Apple OS Finder, you may be able to crack open the library, and copy the video files across to a seperate folder outside of the FCP library.

I hate to admit it, but I still have a large stack of Betacam SP, Digital Betacam and HD-CAM + various DV, HDV and VHS tapes floating around under my bed, and in various boxes – and today, there is still not a cheaper storage format than tape, except when the emulsion paints the heads in the VTR…

I suspect that it will either be cloud based (AWS, Azure, Google etc) or SSD drives that wiull be the way forward. I did buy a stack of BlueRay blank discs, but not as solid as I would like it.

The alternative is to ditch the old source “files”, and just save the masters…
SORRY! That is not the right way to do it.
But many of the big brioadcasters did just that back in the 1990’s when there was not enough Betacam SP tapes in the world, and they have continued to do so when they moved to camera-cards.

Sorry, the above is not helpful.

However, even if not in your territory, can I suggest that you reach out to Peter Rowsell at Polar Graphics, who is based in the farm-country belt of London, UK. Apart from Peter having represented most of the known on-line, and near-online data-storage systems and software for the media business, he also knows alot of other stuff. And, might just help you connect a few missing dots to build something that will last you the 20-years.

I get why a perpetual licence is very attractive, so no question about your choice.

But it is worth noting that Avid, a year ago, was bought out by STG:

Adding, that the subscription price for Avid MC has come down by a fair bit from what it used to be.

Earlier this year I found a dealer that was willing to sell me a 3-year subscription licence to AVID MC Ultimate, which beat the cost of a perpetual licence + upgrades.

This is just an opinion. I obviously do not know your specific circumstances.
