    Definitely the core duo.

btw, keep checking fatwallet.com and dealcatcher.com for Dell coupons. They recently had a $750 or 30% off coupon. You can get some nice deals if you time it right.

One downside to newer laptops… most of them are using the Expresscard slots instead of the old PCMCIA slots. So if you have any PC cards, you’ll need to get new ones.

Check out our Geomancy filters and specifically Hairlines:

It’s a particle system specifically designed to create flowing lines.

If you have AE 6.5 or 7 you can use Particle Systems II or Particle World. Put the logo in a pre-comp and apply Particle World to the logo pre-comp. Under Particle Type, select Textured Square. It will then use the pre-comp as the particle and you’ll have all the logos you can eat.

    Psunami by itself does not.

However, you could try creating a displacement map using WaveWorld and then use that in Psunami. While this probably won’t look perfect, it sometimes looks good enough to sell the effect.

One thing you could do is use expressions to link the back side layer to the front sides Position and Rotation. Then set up the Z Axis Position of the back side layer to be -.2 of the front side. This will create a double sided layer.

If you manually duplicate the layers (and link each duped back to each duped front), then select only the Front layers, you should be able to use EchoSpace, the 3D Assistants, or whatever to arrange/animate the layers.

Not ideal, but it beats trying to do it by hand.

fwiw… I just wrote a tutorial for Studio Monthly that discusses replicating layers with expressions.

There’s tutorials and more info on the 3D Assistants at:

    https://digitalanarchy.com/3Dassist/3Dassist_main.html

In addition, I wrote an article for Studio Montly magazine this month which shows how to use expressions to distribute layers along a 3D path. It just came out, so I’m not sure if it’s available in stores yet.

    cheers,

August 15, 2005 at 6:35 pm in reply to: How can I make plugins of my own?

This is a good intro article:

    https://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.15/15.09/AfterEffectsPlugins/

A little outdated but should give you a good feel for how to start.

Otherwise, C/C++ knowledge and an understanding of programming graphics is essential.

    cheers,

August 11, 2005 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Green screen/Lighting set up question….

the foam backed fabric works the best in my experience. It’s very forgiving and very wrinkle resistant.

You can buy this stuff for $15/yd at chroma-key.com or filmtools.com as well. It only comes in 5 ft width, although you can get it almost any length. Note that the 10 ft screen they’re selling has a seam in it. Even with the seam, I’d still recommend this. It’s very nice stuff.

The material itself is made by Velcro. If you want to buy an entire 40 yd roll of the stuff you can get it for $5/yd from them directly.

    cheers,
    Jim
