  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

I’ve read about Intel Core 2 Processor as the most powerful processor to date. Im planning to acquire a new PC(because of budget constraint) Im thinking whether it would be Pentium D 3.0GHz or Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (both with 2G of RAM). Ive read a lot of reviews concerning the good performance of Intel Core 2 Duo. However, I’ve noticed that the Clock Speed for the various processor number (E6300, E6400,etc) for this processor is less than 3.0GHz as opposed to Pentium D which has more than 3.0Ghz in clock speed, though intel core 2 duo has more L2 Cache and its FSB is much higher (1066MHz) than Pentium D (800MHz).

Does anyone have a first-hand experience in using Intel Core 2 duo (pc)? Could you compare the performance of this processor versus Pentium D 3.0Ghz? I know that PC performance is not only measured in Clock speed but other factors as well like FSB,L2 Cache, RAM, etc. However, I would like to verify the performance of Intel Core 2 Duo. For instance, I would opt for Intel Core 2 Duo with this spec: E6600, 4 MB L2 cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB. Would this run faster that a Pentium D with 3.0GHz? Assuming they have the same 2Ghz of RAM.

I have a Intel Core Duo Laptop 1.6 Ghz with only 1 GB ram and I can say that it gives my dual 2Ghz Mac G5 at work a run for it’s money let alone a single Intel 3Ghz processor. My money’s on the new Intel chips. I’ve been working on a new computer budget next year to get one of these beauts.

quick Addendum… Intel Pentium D processors are being phased out. You would be better off getting one of the newer Core Duos. 🙂

check out benchmarks at wwwDOTanandtechDOTcom or wwwDOTtomshardwareDOTcom.

myself, I would go for Core Duo 2.

    Definitely the core duo.

btw, keep checking fatwallet.com and dealcatcher.com for Dell coupons. They recently had a $750 or 30% off coupon. You can get some nice deals if you time it right.

One downside to newer laptops… most of them are using the Expresscard slots instead of the old PCMCIA slots. So if you have any PC cards, you’ll need to get new ones.

Don’t be confused between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo names. The processor code (EXXXX or TXXXX) would be the one to go by.

AFAIK, laptops based on the newer and more powerful Core 2 Duo (EXXXX) are not out in the market yet. The processor has just been released in July. Might be another month or more before we see the first laptops out and chances are the Taiwanese and Dell will be the first.

On the other hand, there are many choices with the older Core Duo (TXXXX), some way overpriced for a measely INTEL 945GMA graphics chipset that steals/shares RAM from the rest of the system. If you want a graphics GPU with its own unshared RAM, look for the ones with an Intel 945PM chipset. You pay more, but generally the OpenGL and 3D rendering performances are faster and better.
