Looks like this is not such a big problem. Just ask the Avid guys what formats they can output and see which one of them you can use in AE. Do your edits and graphics and output it to whatever format Smoke reads. I believe that standart avi clips would be ok. Just use a lossless codec, or output as TGA sequence.

I’m just recording a tutorial on that. It’s a follow-up tutorial to “Particle Playground on Fire” tutorial. It’s going to be about generating snow and making it stick to the actors and buildings and such. Pretty cool. Stay tuned. It’s comming this week i think.

no. at least not right now. you have to do it by hand. i’m trying to find a smart solution to that problem mostly because people using my CE ShapeExtruder that works with Shape Layers want to create 3D logos from AI files… i haven’t found a solution worth sharing so far, but i’m thinking about it and hopefully i’ll figure something out at the end.

You need to change temporal interpolation from bezier or auto bezier to linear. Just experiment with that and see what works best for you. And i believe theres a whole tutorial on this somewhere on the cow. Maybe in the AE podcast section. Check it out.

it’s just a great animation. theres no plugin or script that will do it for you.
there are many different ways of achieving it. for example you might record this as live footage as a reference, or to key it out and then color, or you could for example do some things in pure 3d and then render out and import to ae.
there are hundreds of other ways. you just have to think this through and decide what’s best for you and your project.

I was running x64, but it turned out worse. AE used to crash and such, but that could have been a fault of wrong drivers or so.
You will benefit from ability to use more ram since x32 only allows 2GB to be used in the system if i’m not wrong.
AE CS3 by itself is a x32 app, but I know theres some smart tool to tewak it to use all x64 power available, but I’m not sure.
There is a post or an article somewhere here on the cow that explains everything about ram and x32 vs x64. Use the search bar.
