I don’t know about Zaxwerks – haven’t used it yet, but CC Ball Action is 3D. you can orbit the camera and everything 😉
Also you might pull it off by using Card Wipe or Card Dance with some clever gradient map. Haven’t tried it though.
You should have CC Ball Action on your AE installation disk.

Before you start spending money on additional plugins try every single possibility that AE gives you. I’m not sure it 6.5 has that plugin, but you might try to pull it off by using CC Ball Action.
Set the grid spacing to 1 and ball size to about 130, then apply matte choker with a high Geometric Smoothness and low Choke value.
You should end up with something like this: 3d_paper_suzy.mp4
It will probably work even better with a single color cutout.
I hope it helps. If you ever need immediate assistance check this link out: Maltaannon’s Hotline
Good luck!

Well… I think you could pull it off just in AE, but on the other hand it would be much easier just to do it in 3D. Take a look at my tutorial at: https://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/growing-3d-vines/
Maybe this will give you some ideas. Feel free to contact me directly by skype (chat mode). You can find the contact info on my website. If we’ll figure this out together than we’ll post a solution in here. Sounds cool?

[Steve Roberts] “A 3D application would have been used. Not only is it difficult to bend things in 3D space with After Effects, doing it at that scale would be impossible.”
I just love when someones work gets me thinking. Especially when things are impossible to do 🙂 and if you know me, than you know that I just love taking the impossible and converting it procedurally to doeable 🙂
Of course I guess that 3D app would be much much easier, if not the only right and elegant choice, although it doesn’t mean it cannot be done in AE.
It so happens that my disk array just died, I lost 4TB of data. I’m restoring it roght now, so I do have some spare time to scratch my head about this 🙂

It should keep them linked. If it doesnt just wait for a sec. When you open up Premiere with linked comps it has to open up AE in the background as well to provide the frames rendered on-demand. If that doesn’t do it for you, than you might try going to your task manager and kill all AE instances. But make sure you’re not killing the one you’re working in at the moment if you are. You can guess bu taking a look at the CPU and memory usage.
After you kill AE instances and DynamicLink server (i dont remember the exat exe name) just try linking one of the comps again by right clicking it in the project window. Once you link it the rest of the files should link automatically.
It happened to me several times and i even developed a small piece of software for myself to do that whole procedure for me. It works most of the time.
I hope it helps. Good luck.

Well… thats true, but you can get this effect to some extend. If you put the light perfectly on the right side it wont change anything, or it will make the extrusion black. The etxtrusion is not treated as faces, but simply as a layer with fill and alpha, so it also reacts to lights, but not exactly how you’d like it. If you really really need this effect you have to do it with gradients on a stroke.

It does react to light, just by being a 3d layer… or did I misunderstood you?
Btw… some ways to create cool look on extruded layers is to use light sweep. It of course depends on what you’re doing, but it’s still worth a try.

I’m sorry I didn’t respond any sooner. But I’ve got good news. I’m developing new Installation software right this second. It will work on both Mac and PC, and it should take care of all installation problems that has occurred throughout last few months.
I hope you like my ShapeExtruder.
Good luck!
